BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

Thanks for the feedback on the handles so far guys. Yeah, maybe you’re all right, I forget sometimes less is more. Maybe skip the handle inserts all together, now that I think of it they’re somewhat reminiscent of the cheesy cheap inserts you used to be able to get for them back in the 80’s and 90’s. (thanks Dave! 😅)

Just give ‘em the brushed finish and be done with it. Last thing I want is for the car to look tacky with a bunch of stick on crap after I’ve spent all this time making sure the body is clean and straight.

Appreciate it fellas.

OMG! We all must be loosing it, we are not spending another members money on something? Guess we'll wait for the next thing you work on Olds Cool to spend some of that money of yours.:rofl::banana::rofl::banana::rofl:

Another thought on the sunroof weatherstrip, Donovan, is that if it is 'dragging' at all on the body as it closes, I've had luck with silicon spray making the seal more slippery. I'm guessing it isn't your issue but wanted to throw that out there.

Just because the door handles didn't quite work out, doesn't mean it's a bad idea. I DO like the the original concept you gave him to work off of. I think part of what makes it work is the ridge in the script like the original badge(s). So, if you could get a badge made for the trunklid correctly, that would be t*ts!!!

Or, airbrushed on.....?

Or, maybe turned silver leaf....?

The weatherstripping durometer thing is real. Aftermarket sh*t for our doors makes it so they don't close right for over a year. Pull up in a sweet ride and proceed to Joe Dirt the doors shut a couple times before they are actually closed. I heard somewhere that Civic door strips work in our stuff, not sure how much different the astro roof stuff is.

I've beat the bushes for a new GM part #20062590 top seal and still can't find one. Even called "my guy" and he can't find one either.

There used to be one on fleabay a while back for like 4 months straight and I think they were asking around 100 bucks for it IIRC. I never needed one so I never even considered it.

Sorry about the bum roof seal, Donovan, that's a kick in the groin for sure after all that work, super clean install!

The door handle inserts look nice, made of metal not plastic that fades and cracks over time. But "coal" is not "cool" and should be fixed unfortunately. Tool bad about that foul up. Whatever you decide, it's your car.

Alright guys, the “Olds Coal” debacle is a cold distant memory, I’ve long since ditched that idea and moved on.

Turna mentioned something I had already been considering, skip the personalization on the stainless inserts, and try using a plain one instead. So after removing the double sided tape that was already put on, I took one of the inserts and flipped it over for a mock-up to see how it looked.

Decided I liked what I saw, it just needed a little Rktpwrd “touch”:

So after sanding down yet another handle through all 3 layers of chrome, nickel and copper, I can safely say 3 things:

1) The passenger’s side handle is done and ready for the matte clear.

2) The chrome plating on OE GM handles is MUCH thicker than the aftermarket ones.

and

3) I really like the finished product this time. It’s clean and simple, understated and doesn’t draw attention, and probably best of all it doesn’t have any spelling errors in it!
🤣

Ironically, this subtle detail with the 1/8” border around it is exactly what I was looking for in the first damn place.
Go figure.

Just goes to show, if there’s a long route to achieve something, trust me to find it.
🙄
