We’re still fully in detail mode on Olds Cool.

Space is quite tight in The Rktpwrd Skunkworks at times, and a couple weeks ago I had an “aw F**K!!!” moment. I was transferring the newer brushed finish front bumper from the temporary work bench to the front of the car, when I accidentally whacked the car with the end of the bumper behind me.

At first I thought I had hit the mirror, but after looking it over thoroughly, I could see no damage. I thought I had avoided disaster until I realized I had actually whacked the “A” pillar drip rail trim.

Don’t see it?
Look closer...

So after some choice words and gnashing of teeth, today I decided to go after seeing if it was going to be repairable. Pulled it off the car, and assembled my small arsenal of tools:

I put it in the vise, and started slowly working the damage out from the backside.

Patience and a very light touch is the name of the game here, don’t rush it and don’t try to work it all out at once. The trim pieces on our cars are pretty delicate.

Damage? What damage??

Pleased with how it came back, I reinstalled it back on the car. Just like it never happened:

Amazing 👏.. was just about to send you a another trim piece . Your repair is better then the factory

Incredible repair job, Donovan, you’re a talent! 👍

Brings new meaning the expression, 'eh, that'll buff out'.

Very impressive D.

Thanks guys! It was a good day in the shop. I dunno if it’s actually talent or I just got lucky. I’d rather be lucky than good any day.

Time to get a second garage to keep the finished car.

That statement is truer than you know. I was just discussing this with the better half yesterday. To truly be able to have the room I need to work on The Juggernaut, Olds Cool is gonna have to find a new parking spot. To that end, I’m seriously considering pricing out some local indoor storage units. They’re relatively secure, dry and heated, might be the only real viable solution for the foreseeable future.

Parking it outside in front of the house in the winter for 6-8 months a year would absolutely destroy it.

Start asking friends and even neighbors if you can pay them to store it in their garage for the winter. You might find one closer and cheaper than you think....
