Martial or Marital?

Yeah, I bought a set of those wrap around band clamps in 3” when we were building the exhaust for The Juggernaut and I wasn’t terribly impressed with them. Ended up not using them. I wouldn’t exactly trust them to seal well either.

I’m pretty sure these things will leak eventually at some point, but I’ll deal with it when the time comes. if I was really concerned about it, I’d would’ve ponied up the extra coin for the weld on V-Band clamps. It’s still an option down the road if need be.

Until then it’s all about getting this done, full send mode engaged.
Donovan, I found the same issue. I am using them on my 70S to attach my tail pipes but I had had them come loose and leak as well. Talking multiple brand 2.5" lap joint band clamps. This thread went dirty in a hurry.

I saved a ton of $$ buying stainless "stepped" band clamps from a bus parts company re-doing exhaust on my 2002 Camaro SS instead of using the "cool kids' " parts companies (read expensive). HUUUGE selection and not a buttload of cash.

They worked for me. And it was great. Slip fit and tighten the clamp and worked like a champ. They had crap up to like 6" band clamps and junk.

Still chipping away at the work underneath the car, I’ve made some pretty decent progress the last couple nights.

Last night I got the last half of the second joint welded up and ground smooth, then cleaned the whole length with some wax and grease remover. Shot it in VHT Cast Aluminum to match the aluminized finish of the rest of the pipe...

Today I grabbed a scrap chunk of 6” steel “C” channel from work, drug it home, and removed the stock 200R4 crossmember. As an interesting aside, here’s something we haven’t seen in a very long time, my metal topped fabrication bench being used as an actual fabrication bench! Not a paint mixing station like it’s been for the last couple years.

Gotta make this fit in this:

I figured out the center line of the middle of the notch based on the center line of the collector, then scribed out my cut lines.

Time to get a’cuttin. Pared the “C” channel down to the correct width on the band saw, then carved out the opening in the crossmember:

Looks like it’s gonna work our pretty good.

I traced around the edges of the crossmember onto the “C” channel next, then proceeded to do some “only mildly” sketchy cutting on the saw to get it shaped to the general curvature. No fingers were lost during the creation of this program.

I’m ready to bevel the edges of the channel next, then start welding it in.
So far so good.

Damn it feels good to be fabricating some shjt again!
