BUILD THREAD Project Olds Cool (Recognition!!)

No, no rubbing marks anywhere.

No, it’s a hydraulic flat tappet. No roller cam and no cam button. Do I really need one for this application? I speak more Oldsmobile than Chevy TBH.
A cam button isn't needed for a hydraulic flat tappet on an older sbc. Retrofit hyd rollers require them in the older blocks.
Newer roller cam blocks had a retaining plate.

Olds factory roller cams for 307 used both buttons and retainers.

Wasn't sure if his SBC had any roller cam in it or whatnot. Have to cover whatever bases possible.

I know it may be a longshot, but whenever you start back on this, and if you can't locate it immediately, pop that cover and pull those torque converter bolts out. Eliminate the transmission entirely and see what happens. Another reach for straws here.

Could have sworn Friday was the day, and I now refuse to fact check that by going back in this thread.
I fact checked for ya... tomorrow is the day 👍 . Hoping for the best for you Donovan. I know you would get right on any repair that was needed, but it would suck to ruin the momentum you have going finishing you punch down list.

Well guys, today we dug into Olds Cool’s heart. Fairly deep into it as a matter of fact.
And we found....

....nothing.

Absolutely nothing. We found one torque converter bolt that was one thread loose, but that’s it. No smoking gun, no “aha” moment, bupkiss.

No sparklies in the oil OR the oil filter, no cracks in the flexplate, no loose flexplate bolts. On the front end, we tore it right down to the timing chain and beyond, everything looks perfect there. No loose timing chain or cam bolts, no loose pulley bolts, no failed elastomer on the balancer. No spinning seal in the cover, no walking crank key, no walking sprocket. No slack chain. No flat lobes on the cam, no upper valvetrain issues.

Fuel pump, it’s pushrod, inside of the timing chain cover all look mint. No rubbing on the transmission inspection cover. We pulled the distributor, inspected it and spun the oil pump by hand. No issues anywhere there either. We also inspected the front main bearings that we could see with the cover off. No signs of spinning or excessive wear or any movement.

Nope, we went after a lot of potential areas today and came up absolutely empty. Kind of a good news / bad news situation I guess, good that we didn’t find any catastrophic failure of anything, but also bad because we couldn’t find anything wrong.

The next step I guess is to reassemble it and give it the full send treatment. Whatever it is will either self clearance and go away, or it’ll fail in spectacular fashion and make its presence very well known.

Frustrating to say the least.
