Is it a weirdo harmonic generated by the new exhaust?
Let's ask Possible Possum...

I am talking more about the plight of the average G-Body with a Gen I SBC. The dialogue indicated there are gaps forming in suitable replacement parts to keep them running well. Or people just like to complain.

If it is the prior, for example, a basic LS swap with a carb (barf!) would negate that issue.

Beats chasing down a quality distributor cap and whining the whole time. The same could be applied to brakes, suspensions, transmissions, or anything else that can be updated. Resto-modding makes good sense.

If I really wanted to go off on a subject you would know it.

Uh oh:

Uncle Tony reinforcing my point. Yeah, yeah... I would also put an HEI in it.

That really sucks Donovan. It would have been a whole lot more satisfying to have found something that was worn or failed.

Completely agree there Jeff.

Assume you had the valve covers off? Nothing rubbing a rocker?

Yes, we had both covers off and went through the whole valvetrain. Nothing out of place or rubbing.

Try running it with the torque converter unbolted?

This we didn’t do. We had the whole front of the engine torn down first as we were sure we’d find something rubbing on the inside of the timing cover. When we didn’t, that’s when we started looking elsewhere.

Man, sucks you didn't find anything Donovan 😒

Agreed!

Oh, it's there. Just haven't found it yet. The tough pill to swallow is whether it's worth deeper diving or send it and see what happens. Perplexing for sure. How close are the pulleys (water pump/crank)?

I'm out of ideas.

As are we. All the pulleys are fine and where they’re supposed to be. I’m gonna reassemble and send it.

Except it runs perfectly fine. It just makes a noise it’s not supposed to. No new inferior parts or old failed ones.

I get that. Just showing that the frustrations are real.

Worst mystery noise I ever heard from a non-invasive job that turned into a nightmare was my buddy's T-type that ended up with the counter weights tapping the oil pan baffle.

So as I said, next I’m gonna put it all back together and send it. Yesterday I put in an order to Rock Auto for all the gaskets and misc crap I’m gonna need, with the addition of a new Pioneer balancer:

I figure it can’t hurt at this point, and it’s cheap insurance. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if I get it all back together and the noise suddenly disappears. That would be about par for the course.

I grabbed fresh oil and coolant while out and about today, but that was the extent of anything for the car today.

I otherwise stayed out of the Skunkworks today, I’ve had enough frustration for a while. The shop is a disaster...

... and the state of the car ain’t much better:

So I guess that’s where I’ll begin tomorrow night, get the shop tuned up and shjt put away and a decent cleanup. Then when the RA order shows up later in the week, start reassembly.

Nice hacksaw... were you doing your nails?

Nice hacksaw... were you doing your nails?

The guys had pulled it out of the drawer to get a hacksaw blade to lift the fuel pump pushrod up in its bore and left it on the counter.

Why? You gotta problem with my hacksaw buddy? (It’s actually been the best hacksaw I’ve ever used)

Couple of parts starting to trickle in after the useless and frustrating noise chasing experience.

Received the new Pioneer balancer and found the timing mark to be off by 50 degrees with the crankshaft key ways lined up. After doing a little research, I found there were as many as 3 different variations of balancer/timing pointer configurations on SBC’s over the years. No big deal, I precisely aligned the 2 balancers with some key stock and by the crank pulley bolt holes, and marked the new balancer for zero with a square off the old one.
Ordered up a new MSD timing tape as well for the new balancer just to make it easier to see and take the guesswork out of the equation.

My RockAuto order should’ve been 3 packages, but only 2 arrived today. Figures that the one I really need to begin reassembly is the one with all the gaskets in it and is the one that’s missing.
🙄

I also decided that I may as well refresh some of the parts while they’re off the car, so Tuesday I went in to work early and stayed late to clean, blast and paint them. Timing cover, crank and water pump pulleys, timing pointer, crank bolt and it’s washer all got the treatment, and the transmission inspection cover got a bath in the solvent tank. The blasted and painted parts are currently still hanging in the booth at work drying, I’ll snap some pictures of them tomorrow. I’ll probably end up repainting the water pump too so that everything matches again.

In case it wasn’t clear or you somehow missed it, the plan moving forward is to just reassemble it and see what happens. I give it 50/50 or better odds that the noise will be gone after that. I’ve had similar problems like this in the past where you’re chasing a ghost forever and find nothing. Give up, reassemble it, and whatever it was is gone.

Really hoping that turns out to be the case here as well.
If not and it fails catastrophically, it’ll just be a good time to make it bigger, stronger and faster.
😏
