hey guys, just dropeed an 87 cutlass rear in my el camino, b/c i cracked the housing on my stock rear. i know the gears arent anything special and its a non posi, but was wondering what the gear ratio might be. thanks in advance.

it depends on the engine and trans the car came with and if it had an optional ratio, but the most likely is a 2.41. It could also be a 2.56, 2.29 or the sexy 3.23.If it was a 442, it would be the stronger 8.5 rear with a 3.73.

I would suspect you had the cover off the change the diff oil and you could have checked the numbers of teeth stamped on the gears to calculate the gear ratio....

The cutlass's had from 2.14 up.

Yeah, but 2.14's are diesel only, and I don't think the diesel was available in the 1987 models.

not positive but i thought the 2.14's were standaard with the olds 307 engine? let me know

I think the 2.29 was, not the 2.14. I dunno what GM was thinking with that gearing....maybe they thought people were buying them to go land speed racing?
