Ive been searching through the forum trying to get as much info as possible before asking. But id just like to confirm before i go and spend some of my money. I have a 79 malibu that i bought with a 305 in it. Now i entered the block numbers online to see exactly what it was and what it was from. From my research it came from a 83 car, so it didnt come factory in mine. So im not sure what the original motor was that came in the car. But i have a 400hp chevy 350 thats it in now. Id like to know what rear end is in the car, and if its Posi or not. From the research on here ive determined that it is a 7.5 non posi, but once again, not completely sure. If it is, is it a pain to convert to posi?

I have 500$ to spend on a rear, which isnt much. That means i probobly cant afford a 12 bolt rear. I was thinking maybe a 8.2 rear end, but i cannot find any and im not sure if it will fit a gbody.

I'm in the process of doing my 7.5 right now. I just bought an auburn posi unit and 3.73 gears for$300 shipped. I'm also putting different axles in. That's gonna cost $295. So it can be done for roughly 500 if you're doing it yourself. You could also look into a gov lock to save money but from everything I've read gov locks are hit and miss on how long they last.

Good luck
Jason

Did you get your Auburn posi online? If so, where? I'm in the market for a posi atm.

Upgrade to the 28 spline Moser axles and a decent 7 5/8" posi. My smaller 26 spline 7.5" spider gears exploded, took out decent 3.42 gears and put a hole in my girdle cover.

Yes. I still have his email. I believe he had 2 other posi units as well. I can give you his email if you want

i found a 8.5 posi unit out of a 70 chevelle for $500. would that work?
I don'tthink that will work without modification because I believe that had leaf springs. You have coil springs

To find out if it is posi smash the gas and see if it leaves two black marks or one. Or pop the cover off and inspect it.

The only rears that I know of that are a direct bolt in with no mods are the rears that you could get in a Gbody. Which would be 7.5 10 bolt or 8.5 10 bolt. Here is a pic to help you identify the differences. Once you see this picture you will always know how to tell the difference at a glance.

You can use a 70 Chevelle rear it's an "A"-body with coil springs not leafs. But you'll need to shorten it 2" (1" on each side) unless you don't mind wheels with weird backspacing. I've also seen the offset upper control arms that work with the a-body rears in a g-body . You could get an 8.2 but you can only get them from a 64-67 Chevelle and gear makers don't offer as many gear options as they do for the 8.5's. I've heard that 8.2's are a direct bolt-in but I'm not sure about the upper mounts though. I know they are 2" shorter than the 68-72 a-body rears. That being said if you could find a 12 bolt from a 64-67 Chevelle that would be awesome . I have seen them come up for sale before.
