i found a 8.5 posi unit out of a 70 chevelle for $500. would that work?
I don'tthink that will work without modification because I believe that had leaf springs. You have coil springs

The A Body Chevelle platform is very similar to our G Body,and it uses coil springs same as ours.But,you would need a set of swap upper control arms,like one of these from UMI;

They have lower ones too,but I dont think they are really necessary.

That rear will bolt right into your car, see if they have the original control arms and if not you'll need the a to g body swap kit from UMI Performance ...PontiacGP put a 10 bolt A body rear in his car a while back, iir it was 64-67 era though...I have a '69 CHevelle 12 bolt in mine and I never shortened it...I got 15x8 wheels with 4.4 BS and it looks great....If it's a complete rear it's worth the money...

You're absolutely right about the A-body rear bolting in.I mentioned shortening the rear because the rear is 2" longer than the original g-body rear and some guys like a deeper dish wheel. My friend has an un-cut 70 Chevelle 12 bolt in his Monte SS and had to use wheels with 5.5" bs to keep the tires from sticking out of the 1/4's. In Mass we can't have the tires sticking out at all because the car won't pass our yearly state inspection. BTW nice lookin Monte you have there.

You can use a 70 Chevelle rear it's an "A"-body with coil springs not leafs. But you'll need to shorten it 2" (1" on each side) unless you don't mind wheels with weird backspacing. I've also seen the offset upper control arms that work with the a-body rears in a g-body . You could get an 8.2 but you can only get them from a 64-67 Chevelle and gear makers don't offer as many gear options as they do for the 8.5's. I've heard that 8.2's are a direct bolt-in but I'm not sure about the upper mounts though. I know they are 2" shorter than the 68-72 a-body rears. That being said if you could find a 12 bolt from a 64-67 Chevelle that would be awesome . I have seen them come up for sale before.

Wow! Learn something new today. Cool. Thanks for that. 🙂

I have the 64-67 version rear end which is 2.5" wider than the 7.5 rear. I have 4.5" bs with a 16x8 rim with 245-50 tires on them and the tire just rubs slightly if the suspension compresses enough. I plan to slightly flare the fenders this winter so my fat friends will be allowed in the car.. :mrgreen:

You are right about the measurements. I had to do more homework. But as I said my friend used a 70 a-body rear which is an inch longer than the 64-67. Your tires look to be low profile and relatively narrow compared to the 28x11.5 Hoosier QT/Pro's or the 275-60's that he uses. The only way we could have used a rim with 4.5" bs is to jack the back of the car up and that doesn't help with launching.

Here's the reason I was unsure of the length of a G-body rear.

Like JBrue mentioned he has the wider A body rear and he's got 15 x 8 wheels with 4.4 bs on his Monte. His wheels are not tucked in like mine but I think if he had a wheel with 5.5 bs it would be similar to mine. I would think that Malibu would have a shortened 9" in the rear. I like the look of JBrue's Monte and he has a serious engine under the hood so I would think his set up is for more than just appearance.

I think you're agreeing with what I originally said about the 5.5 bs. The Malibu does have a narrowed 9". I posted a pic kind of "Jokingly" to show why I forgot the length of a stock G-body rear. I also like JBrue's car I've already posted that. I just posted what we had to do to get my friends Monte SS to hook hard at the track. It's also a Mass rule or law that tires can't extend past the sheetmetal .We don't have a say whether we like the look or not if they stick out it won't pass state inspection.

in case you didn't know, JBrue is a State Trooper so his car must be legal in his state. I know they have a rule about tires extending past the fender here in Ontario but they don't seem to enforce it much, if at all. BTW do you know who's Malibu that is. it sure looks nice and quick. I like to see race cars on a open trailer. We have a covered trailer now and it's not the same hauling the car down the highway, but it is convenient when you don't have to pack and unpack every weekend

Tires sticking out is inforced here . My mistake for thinking they do everywhere. I didn't bring it up to say anything about JBrue. I was talikng about my friends Monte SS and what we had to do. I'm not sure what part you're not getting but the Malibu is "Mine". My truck, my trailer ,and my car.

Here's another pic and can we be done with this.
