You also have to remember about the only thing avaialble for an 8.5 rear from GM is the same thing that interchanges with the 7.5.
There is nothing available from GM specific for the 8.5 rear last time we checked.
Now if you give them a part # they can tell you available or discontinued.

Your RPO code in the trunk will show an 8.5

I'm pretty sure your 442 came from factory with it and the 3.73s. Sounds to me like they just want your 8.5 for themselves.

As long as it's the original rear end it is definitely an 8.5. Look at the bottom of the rear if it has "fangs" its a 7.5, if its kind of square on the bottom its an 8.5 heres what an 8.5 looks like..... Don't mind my sticker lol.

thanks guys, but what was going on was i needed proof that that was the original rear end and i got gm heritage to help me out with that. the thing about autozone is that i searched for a gn bearing and it said 7.5 too. i dont understand why it would say that.

isn't it a moot point? aren't the bearing and seals the same part # for the 7.5 and 8.5 rear's, if they gave you the wrong parts , those parts would chew up either rearend axle :? Those ****ers should just pay for it just because of that, no matter what they gave you it would have ****ed up either rear, facory or otherwise, it's not like you stuffed them in a ford 9". Hope you come out on top on this 😀

8.5 and 7.5 use same axle bearings and seals. The axles are the same length too just different splines.
