I'm not saying it's within your budget or that your cheap but like you said some people who have them up for sale you don't know what your getting and they are asking alot more than $950...
I plan to upgrade my rear end this winter and stick some disk brakes on it..I have ample room for a 2" wider rear end so I'm not going to bother with an 8.5, I'll get something that's far more plentiful and plus I don't run a 3:42 so to try to find a 2 series carrier for an 8.5 is something I don't have time to do....
i got truly lucky with my 8.5 beings i paid a whole 200 bucks for it. got it from about 20 miles from home on the indian reservation from a burned down 87 GN... flipped it over with a bobcat and cut the rear out with a torch. had to do all new bearings, races, seals, and brakes including hardware, but i still have less than 400 into the whole thing.
i really wish i still had the jigg i built when my old man and me put a 9 in his 80 malibu racecar, i would start shortening caprice 8.5's and selling them dirt cheap with 75-79 nova axles in them. 75-79 nova 8.5 rears are about an inch wider overall than the g-bodys. i figure the only actual pain in the *ss would be the uppers will need to be about an inch shorter and i think someone builds swap upper arms for this kinda stuff.
anyways, i hope evrybody had a great thanksgiving 😀

Shotgun. That Malibu of yours looks damn good.
Hey Phoenyx, Shotgun said he took the quote with from the MR site, That Malibu is mine, HP JUNKEY, I just noticed it today   I also just joined this site today after lurking a bit. I figured that I can never have enough info about G-bodies, so why not broaden my horizons!!
Love this site too!
t's not that i think its actually stronger than a 7.5 just a little bit harder to come by for one and the other is the price. People that have them for sale want a small fortune. At least around here i have came across one out of 442 that somebody who buys them and sells them racers beat me to it :x I have blown apart four 7.5in rears. 2 in a Astro van and 2 on my G body's, so i now how weak they can be..But i have one out of a 87Monte SS now and its held up so far... I plan on doing a rebuild on it using a Zexel Torsen limited slip with 28 spline axles, solid crush sleeve, welding the axle tubes and girdle. All in all i have under 300 in all the parts. Now i am just trying to collect the little pieces and then will be doing the rebuild myself using the stock 3.73 gears. I have never done one but it sounds fun. I hope it holds up until i find the ever elusive 8.5 or until i can afford a Moser or 9in. 8)
Speaking of which...are those rears complete, ready to bolt on. And if so are they any good and what kind of gears do they come with? I was just wondering cuz 950 for it complete seemed like a pretty good deal, but i dont want to buy it if its full of cheap *ss parts.
I got a question. How much work would be involved in using a 9in out of a ford car. From the research I have done there is anywhere from .5" to like 3" width differences. Couldn't different offset accommodate the width of the axle housing? I know you would have to weld the mounting brackets and all but I have found complete setups for way cheaper then just the housings that are ready to bolt in. I am a decent fabricator and have all the necessary equipment just figured it might be a cheaper route.
