Without getting into the good rears I want to know more about the stock g-body rears and what else used 26 spline Axel's my 78 Cutlass has a stock rear with 2.56 gears I have a posi unit in my shed with 4.10 gears out of an S-10 will it work with like 3.23s I know it's a stage3 so that's the tallest it will take ideally I would like to have a 3.08 posi but I'm not trying to spend the cash right now. So that said clue me in guys I'm a bit confused and what's up with 2 different sizes toothpicks in these cars 7.5 and ??7.62??I'm lost and can't afford a 9" what's up?

Yes now I just need to count the splines because I don't remember what year the s-10 was it was a square one but a 4 door

if you have to start looking for 28 spline axles and have to install that carrier in your rear end with a new crush sleeve if I were you I'd keep what you have till you have the money for the rear that you really want.

88 and up is supposed to be the change over to 28 spline axles, they may be exceptions so count the spline. As said factory replacement 3.23 gears are tallest gears that will fit that carrier, not the end of world with a taller tire. You can get thicker gears to run higher ratios on your 2 series carrier but there isn't gears to go the of other way. That S10 posi is a gov lock or gov bomb as most call them. Unless you are going to the track, a 3.08 open isn't the end of the world, although I would upgrade to aftermarket spider gears, myself and other have had them explode.

Might need a 8.5" to fit that center section.
