Safe Horsepower

If you want to get into cars, you need these regardless of what you work on. Most cars can fit an engine in the trunk, as l67 said. If not, find a buddy with a truck. We've all had to start somewhere.
Yep! Hauled this fresh 5.3 home in the trunk of my mazda 6 on friday. It squatted good, but handled it properly.

by tune up what do you mean? i already did the plugs, wires, oil change, and coolant change. i know the basics to an engine its just about finding the time to do it.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the plugs, wires etc. That's a good place to start. Can you pull the distributor and put it back and get it in time? I'm talking about walking up to an engine that you have no idea if it's been turned over or not. Do you know how to tear the engine down to the bare block and reassemble it? I'm not picking on you. I'm just saying you need to know how to do these things before you try to go upping the horsepower.

Yes i believe if i had an engine on a stand and an entire day i could take it apart and put it back together. i know how an engine works, how the conrods connect to the pistons and the crank, i know basically everything there is to know about stripping a motor down.

Something I've found odd is every gm car I've had somehow had enough room in its trunk for its own engine lol
Hell, if it didn't turn our cars into gassers you could fit three v8 shortblocks in there. What's the payload of a wagon again...? All you really need is a driver's seat.

Ok. That's good. You didn't say anything about putting it in time. I've seen guys who could tear their engine down and resemble it but I'd end up having to put it in time for them. It's not that hard but if you don't do it right it'll never run. Timing is critical in boosted applications, so is fuel/air mixture.

Just make sure you're prepared and do your research before jumping into a big project.

Learn how to rebuild, and I mean completely (including new well plugs and throttle shaft bushings) a quadrajet carb. It comes in handy, especially if you have to deal with one, I assume your car still has it's qjet? I mean if it works it works, but when the time comes you'll have to do it eventually.

Rebuilding a Quadrajet is something I still haven't done and I've been messing with cars for over 15 years. I've got 2 at home that I'm probably gonna tear into when I get settled into my new place. I might run a Q-jet on the Vortec.
