There was Vortec 350's and 305's. They were in the trucks and vans from 96-00(maybe 02 in the heavier duty stuff). Internally all the 350 should be the same, roller cam, either the 062 or 906 casting head. If you're unsure what it came from, look for the suffix code on the small pad on the block just in front of the passenger side head. One other thing to note is the piston rings are metric(more expensive) instead of standard like the 350's before them.

I belive a 172 could be a 177. He bought it used from a Guy who said it was a 17?. There were no part # on it.
