metra adapters? mine just dropped in the same holes as the stock ones

Monte Carlos from 81-88 had 4x10s from the factory and require an adapter to run 6x9's

Well they're not 'required'. My old Bonneville had 6x9s installed when I got it. They were old ones from the mid 80s. No adapters were used. They just put long screws in at an angle and tightened them as much as possible.

Now this may sound like a crappy set up. But after I installed a 50 watt/channel CD player they pounded hard enough that a few people thought I had a small sub in the trunk.

A Bonneville is a totally different critter. They have big package trays. I beleive GM put 6x9s in them at the factory not the 4x10 you see a 2 door A/G body 78-88

I don't know about all the years of Bonnevilles. But my old 1985 had the same size package tray as my old Grand Prix had. Now my 1980 Malibu has the lrger tray with 6x9s.

Well we can leave it at this - I've tried just about everything imaginible (short of moving the backseat forward - which is something I've been mulling) to fit 6" x 9" speakers into a tudor ( 78-88 ) A/G body best I could concieve was an angled package tray coverring up about 4" of the back window - adapters are the only feesible way. The tray is less than 6" in depth. Now redressing adapters - if you can eliminate teh tortion bar in the trunk - it's a good idea. My 81 has strut lifts instead and it's factory.

can someone take a picture of this because from what i am hearing you are saying without some modification that 78/88 G/A bodies can't have 6x9 from factory...that's what i have gathered from this post. My car came with one 6x9 in the package tray factory and now i have two of them back there in factory mounted holes no modification required. Just don't understand what you guys are talking about really

Well that's because you have a Malibu, like me. Our package trays are larger than the other g-bodies. I've worked on Grand Prixs, Cutlasses, Regals, and Montes. They all have that small package tray that came with 4x10s from factory. The only cars I have seen so far that has the large package trays are the 2-door Malibus, and all the 4-door g-bodies that have the rear vent windows mounted in the body not the doors (like my 80 Bu). My old car (85 Bonneville 4-door) had the vent windows in the doors, and had the small package tray.

alright thanks for the clarification there ha i was totally lost

I have 6x9 Fosgates in my factory rear deck,i had to cut alittle, but not much:fits pretty sweet the oly hard part i had was the torsion arm for the trunk...obtw '88 cutlass

sorry OP said something about 81-88 Monte Carlo - I just assumed that was the style of car he has and rolled from there. Monte's have small trays like 2 door Cutlasses and came with 4" x 10" in the deck. Didn't mean to confuse anyone ... I figured throwing a B-ville as a reference in was a tad more confusing - it had me scratching my head.

Can you post some pix, because this was a little pet project for months when I had my 86 Salon. I couldn't flush or surface mount them and I was trying with some factory 6"x9" (Grand Am premium Delco - I think they came from) which have much smaller magnets than an aftermarket.

Wish i was on here earlier:been out working on the unit all day.I did look to see how i did it-has been a couple of years.Took my rear seat out and had to cut alittle of the sheet metal behind it.Sorry to late today to take pictures, but i'll get some for you tomorrow..
