Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

I like what you're doing with the color! Especially on the valve covers. If you haven't done the engine bay yet, I'd say maybe satin black. I think gloss would look good everywhere but the inner wheel wells. Personally I'd only do satin or flat on those. But yea, everything else like the frame, firewall, rad support would look good in satin or gloss i.m.o.
Good luck! 8)

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Thanks man. Yep, I've got 4 cans of satin black I'm just going to do everything in. Masking just seems like it might be the hard part around the master cylinder and heater box.

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

I like how the wheels look! Keep in mind though because plastidip can get pretty thick, it could also make your wheels get out of balance the more layers you put on. I would stick to using it on non rotating stuff. Only time I have seen a cracked bellhousing was in my buddies 79 C10 race truck- he broke his driveshaft in half and polevaulted his truck- that broke the bellhousing. We pulled the trans out and half the bellhousing fell off.

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

I like them rims! Much better than trying to find trim rings. I was thinking about getting some plastidip to test out different colors on my rallies so im glad I came across this thread!

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Yeah I see where you are coming from about wheel balance. Might rebalance them after they are painted, weights are going in the inside of the wheels anyway. And yeah plasti dip is fun man, you are really experiment and play around with it.

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Looking good, did you every figure out why you've cracked so many trans bell housings?

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Still not exactly sure. When we pulled the motor both the rubber mounts were all cracked and twisted up. Also the driveshaft end going into the transmisson has strange wear marks on it, so it may be a tiny bit too short, it is going to be te sleeved after everthing is in. Also test fitting the new jegs cross member it seems that it lifts the trans up and forward more than my modified crossmember. Hopefully a combo of all that stuff is definitely the problem, and it is resolved.

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Got quite a bit done today. Engine bay is painted, radiator is back in. Inner fenders are about 75% done just need a few touch ups. Here are some progress pics. Hope to have the front suspension done by this weekend, and the motor in next weekend. Also got some parts from summit and ebay last week, so I will have pics of those for you guys tommorow.

Passenger Side motor mount all cracked and split.

Re: Budget Cutlass Build Thread, Fresh New Look

Finally found the route of the problem. Motor mounts (ones that bolt to the block) are not correct for the clamshell mounts. I know the clamshells are right, but bolt holes are still about and inch off width wise. Would like to get a set by next weekend, haven't found any online, and junkyards are not an option. Feels good to have finnlu found the source of all the problems.
