BUILD THREAD Sweet Johnny & Gina: A Love "Two Large" To Fail

Progress has been slower than anticipated, but I've managed to get quite a bit cleaned and organized so hopefully it goes together smoothly. At this point the old cam and lifters are out and the engine is 90% clean. I still need to scrape the pan gasket, clean again, and paint some black over a few ugly spots like the visible sections of frame and core support before moving on to reassembly.

The victim:

The damage:

I've turned my favorites upside down so you can see what happened but they're all messed up, and I wish you could feel how concave the bad ones are. This view displays the lifters in their respective positions in the engine, with the top left being cylinder #1.

Got a couple of flat lobes but nothin' to be too concerned about, right?

And here's an upskirt shot for you pervs out there:

The choice was to do this inside the building or use the engine hoist to yank the engine, fix, and reinstall it with the car outside. I'm happily performing this task with the engine still in the car, though you'd question my level of happiness at times.

And here are the new lifters soaking in 5W20 in preparation of later events:

There's a boatload of stuff coming up that will take a lot of time to complete and probably even longer to write about, but you won't want to miss the next update.

My gawd. I’ve never seen flat tappet hydraulic lifters that bad before. It’s a miracle that thing even ran!

I think they're about the worst I've ever seen as well. With the lifters and lobes in this condition it's shocking enough, but add in the previous fuel and ignition issues and it's proof that miracles do happen. Apparently Gina just wants to LIVE. It's been a while since I've driven a 305/3 speed with highway gears out back so I was under the impression that everything was functioning correctly and just weak due to the C.I. and the stock cams of the time. Clearly that was not the case. Fear not, as an exciting solution has been provided by Eric/ 78Delta88! The new cam that he sent me will likely more than double the previous power output.

You could probably use a couple of those to shave with, looking at the edge they’ve got now
🤣
You're not far off- I did slip and cut my finger with one of them. It was chipped on the edge though. They fought me a little but I managed to pull them all out the top with nothing but a pair of pliers and a pick. After inspecting multiple lifter bores I've concluded that they're not scored or damaged but definitely need cleaned up a little so I'm going to scuff them with Scotch Brite since that's the best I can do at the moment.

Wow those are yummy. Need framed for the grand kids. So when you tell them about Hill 29, taking out the machine gun nest all by yourself, and walking 3 miles to school in the snow... You also got proof of Gina's resurrection.

You're right about the covers and blankets- I should probably be using them even though the paint is scratched all to hell. Someone already ruined the fenders and hood years ago and I went without a coat to avoid zipper gouges, left my pocket knife on the table, and wore a belt with a D ring buckle all in an effort to avoid damage. I know I accidentally leaned on the header panel more than I should have and supporting all of my weight with the heater box made me cringe but I'm normally pretty good about staying off the fenders. In any normal situation I'm about as graceful as a fish wearing roller skates but I don't think I added a single scratch today.

With the pan still off and if you can afford it. Get the M55HV with the steel shaft. Those gears in the oil pump worn by now plus probably pitted up with all the lifter wear.

The nylon connector probably long gone or soon will be. O'Reilly's had the steel for about 10, the pump around 35 ish. With all that metal, new screen and pickup also.

I would pull # 1 rod cap and # 1 main. Just look at bearings see how bad they are or if ok.
