I have a few questions about the governor in my TH 200 4R. It is a standard trans out of an LG4 Grand Prix and as such has the low WOT upshift point. It also is always one gear too high when accelerating or coming off a corner. I am wondering, will the different governor let it down shift lower than the standard one? Also, where can I buy a governor with a higher shift point, say 5,000 RPM?

I am not really set on using this transmission yet, but I am trying to get some information before I make my choice. It is in the car right now, but I may use a T-5 manual instead. I like manuals better, but the automatic is cheaper and easier to deal with at the moment.

Not my ideas but I came across them while researching for my 200 4R hunt/swap. Hope they help.

There's a simple fix to this problem. Well fairly simple. Unlike the TH350 & 400 trans. the shift governor is not on the side of the trans case. It's inside the pan located at the rear shaped like a snow cone held in place by 4 bolts. Loosen the pan and remove all but the rear bolt. Now loosen the rear bolt and slowly lower the front to drain fluid. Remove last bolt and remove pan. Easy Eh. Remove the 4 bolts holding the Governor cover on,the Governor will come out at the same time so DO NOT drop it. It has the plastic Speedo drive gear on one end and the Gov. weights on the other. You will see 2 weights and 2 springs. Remove the spring from the Big/Thicker weight. The Grande Nationals/Turbo Buicks do not have this spring from the factory. You may want to install a new filter while your inside this oily mess. Clean Gov.& Pan with Carb/Brake cleaner blow dry reinstall Gov., bolts, Pan, bolts, refill & check fluid level & your are done.
Go test your handy work.

theres another fix although removing one spring is a good one. remove the governor and grind about 1/32 (1/16 is much better, i like to sneak up on it) off the bottom of the big weight. keep dong this till it shifts where you want it. grind to much? weld a spot back on the weight.

sneak up on it? Like a ninja?

I think i read something on Super Chevy magazine. It involved trimming one of the governor weight. How much i don't know but if i remember correctly California performance transmissions does this to their trans rebuilds. Here is a link to the rebuild story....

Wouldn't it be easier to find a governor out of a Monte SS, 442, Grand National? I know they are hard to source but i'm sure your local trans shop could help you find one.But i think you would need the valvebody too...Maybe?? Correct me if i am mistaken. If not i've run across a few SS trans and could see if i could pull the governor and or valvebody.
