The "I'm Obsessive With Lawn Tractors" Thread

speaking of narrow frames, here's what's in my shed. 73,127,106, not pictured is the 124 I picked up from clutch a couple years back that's tucked in the corner of the shed waiting for its turn. 106 is full time plow duty. the 127 has a 48" deck, 42" blade, and a brinly sleeve hitch & plow. Also have a IH#2 cart.

Grabbed this one from the garbage a few years ago. Turned out to be locked up. Got it freed up and running. Slimed the tires, sharpened the blades, and cleaned it up. Cut my grass a few times with it and sold it for $350 the same day I listed it. I can’t keep more than one at a time and i can’t get rid of my other craftsman.

Those narrow frames have a real following. My buddy would strip them down to the frame, rebuild everything and paint each and every part. He was a pretty fussy guy so they came out real nice. He had one all done up that he left at his moms place just for snow removal with a nice clean blower on it. Our nickname for John was Cubby. LOL

My uncle died about 20 years ago. His wife a few years later. Their daughter got the house. She had a yard sale a few years later. My uncle was a handy guy around the house. He had a mint late 60s Sears Suburban garden tractor that had a bunch of attachments with it. Deck, blower, disc, bottom plow. He always had a big garden behind the house. He even had a soft cab for it.
My buddy on the next block was looking for a rider. My cousin sold him everything for a couple of hundred bucks. Ed used the tractor to mow his property for a couple of seasons. He left the attachments behind his shed. Something failed in the electrical system. I told him the motor was the same as the one in the 112 I had so he could probably just get the part at the local JD dealer. He bought a new 48" walk behind instead. A few months later he told me if I wanted the old Sears he would give it to me along with the attachments. I was busy. Never had the time to pick it all up. When I finally told him I would come over and get the stuff he told me he had already taken it to the dump. It was a real shame. This thing was so clean ! Round fenders, orange and white. It even had a hi/low range transmission. It was pretty heavy duty. It would have been a nice project to restore. Oh well. Snooze you lose.

I understand the "snooze you lose" part of it. I rode past a older gentleman's house returning from work every afternoon for 4 years and had seen a 18/6 twin that was sitting with flat tires and the snowblower attachment along side his garage. One Friday evening the blower and tractor with a box of attachment arms were at the foot of his drive way with a $800.00 obo sign on it. Stopped to talk to him and was told the blower was noisy but worked and the box of arms he could not remember what they were for (Electric 3 point hitch with tiller arms) The tractor only had low range and the engine would not run past idle without back firing. I offered $600.00 and told him I would return with cash and my trailer to pick it up within the hour. Guess I was not the only person to make the offer and it was first to put the cash in his hand would then own it. I pulled up to his house with my trailer and the money to see them loading up on someone else's trailer. Don't know what ever happened to the tractor or the attachments it but, the 3 point hitch with the tiller arms (I have the tiller it works with) and the snow blower attachment were what I was mainly after at the time. Like you say...Snooze you lose.

I see I'm not the only one, I don't have any pics of mine, I'll try and remember to take some and upload them.

I am more into farm tractors. I have a 1946 IH Farmall Model A. Last year replaced the front axle with a heavy duty one. Also upgraded it to 12 volts and electronic ignition.

Had to get “old faithful “ fired back up, y’all’s talking about all these lawn tractors…. Burned the belt on my simplicity regent, and the steering is bad on the xp, and my old super bronco hasn’t run in a couple years…

Don’t even know what brand this thing is, just that it’s blue… small ford maybe? All I know is that I picked it and it’s twin up at an estate auction about 5 years ago for $40 for both… gave one to a buddy a couple years ago when he bought his house, and still has his as a backup mower… best $40 bucks I’ve ever spent…

Eh.

So on the one hand, bearings, sleeve, etc for the main pulley on the mowing deck arrived today.

Pulled everything out to try working on it and got the pulley off the deck, which, is where I've hit a snag.

The c-clips inside really ought be changed with everything else because 1) I'm in there, 2) there was a failed part, and, now 3) (the problem) one was damaged where the posts on the pliers should go in by the old bearing flopping around. The eyes are crushed in, basically gone.

The double pulley is a $130part and I'm not paying that. So.... time for thinking.
