BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

The hood looks awesome, Donovan! Did you have to build up the header panel to get it to flow with the modified hood?

I did, Mike. The angle of the hood scoop portion of it was as good as I could get it, but it needed a little bit of buildup on the header panel as well to get it all to flow nicely. Long and short strand fibreglass fillers are compatible with the SMC header, so I used long strand to make up the bulk of the difference, then further refined it with short strand and regular body filler.

Looks great, as I expected it would. How does the weight compare to a stock hood?

Thank you, and quite well actually. Despite its heavily modified appearance, it doesn’t weigh that much more than stock, even with the addition of the body filler. The gas struts that came with my billet aluminum hinges still easily support the weight of the completed hood without having to upgrade to stronger ones.

A couple things that work in my favour on this are the fact that a lot of the factory sheetmetal bracing was removed to provide the necessary engine clearance, and that despite it’s appearance, the filler work is actually quite thin. I am able to stick a common fridge magnet to most places on the hood, and it will actually stick.

Looks great! Been following on IG also.

Awesome work as always, my friend. Compared to the typical cowl induction hood, I like the way the lines of this one flows. It's quite unique in design. The whole car is unique and certainly not your father's Oldsmobile. I love the combination of the Euro style headlights, shaved and narrowed bumpers, and of course the cool one only cowl induction hood. 😎😉👍

Thanks Jim!

Thanks for the compliments Jack! I know you’re more of a wagon guy than a coupe guy, so for you to comment means all that much more.

I’ve put a lot of time, effort, attention to detail and thought into the design and styling of this hood, so seeing it all finally come together is just that much more rewarding.
I think the ancillaries like the euro headlights and the narrowed bumpers lend themselves well to completing the total package IMO, but I may be a little biased there. 😅

Thanks again for checking in on this progress, it’s nice to hear from you.

Got the hood into the high build polyester spray filler last night. It laid down beautifully, 2 coats on all the horizontal surfaces. Trying not to get too excited just yet, although it’s all one color, this is still the bodywork stage, and not actually in primer surfacer yet.

There’s still some work to do to it, some further refining of the details, particularly around the center peak line and the shape of the outside radius’s(?) of the scoop lines. But it’s damn close.

I’ll give it 48 hours to set up and cure, then Thursday Mike and I will bolt it back on for blocking. I want it on the car for that stage so that all the lines and angles get block sanded uniformly together as one.

Getting closer…
