BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

Great work. I used fiberglass around my Hbody headlights. My bezels were staggered, so modding them wasn't an option. That 3M plastic bond is great stuff. I used it last week on a Cavalier air tube, worked perfect.
Keep up the progress.

Donovan,
The look fantastic! I had a though in my mind you were going to go with the spray chrome. I have seen it and I think it looks on par with the factory chromed plastic if done correctly.

Look forward to the pictures and future updates.

Happy New Year!

Hey D,
You never cease to amaze me. Keep up the awesome work. :notworthy:
Happy New Year, my friend. :friday:

Have one question Donovan, will the chroming process ruin your paint work?? Other than that great work as always. Happy new years and looking forward to more posts!

Hey everybody, thanks for all the kind comments and words of encouragement - it means a lot!

Jack, Jim and Kevin, a very happy New Year to you all as well! It's good to talk to you guys again, it's been a while and I've missed it.

I'm excited (and a bit nervous to be honest) to get the parts back and see how they look in the finished form after all that hard work.

Truly custom. Here I am trying to find a 35 year-old OEM grille that's not too crusty, and you're inventing entire new ones. Thanks for the detailed write-up and pictures of the process. Looking forward to seeing the chrome applied.

Thank you sir! I guess it just goes to show, even those old crusty grilles can be brought back from the dead with a little work!

The chroming process shouldn't impact my paint work, as the parts aren't going to receive true chrome plating in the conventional sense.

Rather, the parts will be spray chromed which is an entirely different process. Essentially, a thin layer of real silver (the metal, not the color) gets applied to the desired areas and then sealed in with a clear coat.
With that being said, the painted and other areas not desired to receive the chrome can be masked off only putting it where it's wanted.

Here's a couple of links, one for the spray chrome process, and one for buddies shop that will be doing the work:

and photos of his work can be found on his Facebook page here:

Thanks again everyone!

If you are sending it to Nye's Touch let me know. I can try to get you a bit of a break on $$. He is part of Airdrie Dads and I'm a part of that group and believe he offers us a bit of a discount.

Thanks for the offer Matt.

Paul at Nye's already has the parts, and it may actually end up costing me nothing. Paul found out about my fabrication skills, and asked me to consider helping out in modding a customer's rear Harley fender.

In return, he said we would work something out with my bill, or he might even end up owing me money by the time it's all said and done.

Gotta love bartering and trading labour!

Sounds good, he's a good guy. Can't wait to see them completed.

Very nice work.
I for one absolutely prefer the 80s design over the 78/79.
Your build is amazing! Cant wait to see the final product.
