Got her out for a run tonight.

Rushed through the last few things for reassembly and decided to go for a rip. Got the lockup wiring on, and put the wiring stuff out of the way, tied things up and put the interior back for the front seats.
Put the lights on the drivers rear and threw the plate on.

Took a quick burn around and grabbed a half tank of the good stuff. She's a thirsty girl.



Decided it was safe to go a bit further. It was running ok and the tune is pretty mellow so took it out to a back road that has good black top.

Drives really nice, even without a proper alignment it tracked straight, rode surprisingly smooth, handled corners really well (like really!) Felt really good on the shifts (may need to up the line pressure a tad bit I was happy for a cruiser) and at 62mph it rumbles along at 2200rpm. All win!

Maybe do a little pull, just to see.

First off, don't do a pull without starting a data log. Especially the first one.

Anyway, buddy and I were too excited.

Roll in from about 10mph. FLOOR it!!!

Two shifts at 6000 and I'm doing about 85mph. Little hesitation in the middle around 3000-4000rpm but oh boy does she come on after. That.

Look in the rear view ad there's smoke. 😯😯😯.

Pull over to see oil leaking down the back of the block pretty good. Can't see where from but we need to head back asap.

Whip a nut an limp her back home. As I'm coming down my street she starts tapping the lifters just a tad. Shut it off and coast to the driveway.

Now, if you do this be sure not to turn the key back to the lock position, or you will end up sh@tting a coconut, don't ask how I know.

Turns out the oil pressure sensor must have taken a dive. Back of the motor is covered, as is the trans, underbelly, diff, driveway, pretty much everything.

Time for a mechanical backup as it always shows 110psi on the Holley. And now my fuel pressure on the dash is showing 100psi but my mechanical gauge shows 41. 😕

Put oil in and she fired up with no adverse noises. Idles nice and smooth, hopefully I didn't cook the bearings.

I'm not sure whether to be happy the car kicks *ss or sad that my motor is hurt. 😕



with the oil still leaking when you got back I doubt you did any damage to the engine. I don't want to add to your problems but it looks like the Dodge has a bent axle...🤔
 
And this is why junk yard engines are the best engines... very little remorse or guilt is involved when you goof up.
 
Maybe consider these alternatives to help lighten the current "Pissed Off" feelings:
1. Your Engine decided that a light undercoating of oil would help protect the car from future rust problems.
2. Your Engine decided to give itself its first oil change hence saving you all that trouble of doing it yourself.
3. Your Engine decided an Inkblot Test on your driveway was in order for a psychological evaluation of the new driver; examine the personality characteristics and emotional functioning so it could be prepared for whats coming.
4. Your Engine became worried that you might not continue to spend every waking hour of every day under the hood with it, and it just decided to take a whiz on the ground to show its concern.

I think it'll be ok. Perfect timing for a break in oil change after 20 miles. Haha

Dodge might look bent but it has less than 1000miles so I think it's probably good.

Truth, I'm actually more concerned that the ECM is showing weird readings between the oil and fuel pressure. Something is backfeeding voltage to the sensor.

It's not the end of her, some lessons need to be learned the hard way. It will have a mechanical backup on the oil pressure from now on, and I'll be sure to seal things up nice. Can't remember if it was a Delco sensor or not, pretty sure it was a cheap off brand.
 
Ok, the review of what we got here.

So I had bought a Standard Motor Products PS308 oil pressure sending unit (going to double check that part number), I don't understand why I didn't use the factory sending unit, I remember not thinking the connector was the same. Anyway, I went to the local parts place, grabbed a Wix filter and some dino juice 10w40 Valvoline.

When I got home I pulled the broken sender out and started cleaning the oil from the harness, connector, firewall, lifter valley cover, everywhere. I didn't see a leak point on the sending unit so after some brake clean I blew threw the bottom and there was no resistance. So the oil was shooting through the connector out onto everything. I cleaned up the contacts in the connector, and started sticking it on some other sensors I have. Sure enough everything started working right on the ECU. So I dropped the approximately 2 quarts of oil left in the motor and put a new filter on and topped up the oil. It fired right up and went right to 40psi of oil pressure. Exactly what it had cold at idle before. No strange noises, no knocks or metallic grinding noises and no lifter tapping.

I rolled it outside of the garage and left the copious amounts of oil burnt onto my beautiful headers to smoke away as she warmed up. I showed 34-35psi hot so my bud Woody and I went for a quick rip. Everything works fine, no crazy noises or anything.

Gonna call this one a win. 👍

Seriously dodged a bullet.

So on the way I have a 16x1.5mm to 1/8npt adapter and we will be running a mechanical backup for the oil pressure. Good lesson learned.
