Not much to figure out, really. It been done literally hundreds, if not thousands, of times, and 90% are documented on the internet. If you can't do it, you should find a different hobby.

My ex and current BIL had G body Monte Carlos all sbc powered. We had a 75 Cutlass 4 door with an Olds 350, great car, took a ton of abuse. We also had a 81 Delta 88, Olds 307, best $500 my family spent on a car. The SBO was always reliable, same can't be said for the sbc, so I am not a fan. The LS is reliable and very well built, many years of engineering improvements. But everyone does it and my opinion won't stop that. Automaker's make and sell a ton of CUV's, is it a good idea? Everyone buying them says, yes it is. Beyond hate is what I think of them, it won't stop their sales. I always like the obscure and maybe my opinion blows, so be it.

It's a hell of a first project. Good luck.

Who says I'm not happy?
I'm in a unique position i have some transferable skills. I have been making custom cnc bmx bike parts for years and need something more complex. I have some car nut friends, some mechanical enigineer friends. I work at a engineering firm. it just sounds fun. Here is some of my work. If i cant pull this off it would be a real embarassment

Quitter. Another Cutlass lost to an LS..... why don't more people do Montes and Malibus? Do you know how much unfvcking I'm going to have to do once I find one to make right again?
Hey hey hey now, there are a lot more Cutlasses and Montes than Malibus. Hard enough to find a decent Malibu that hasn't been made into a "racecar" by hacking up the interior and ditching the heater/AC

IMO If you really want to make the OLd's guys happy use your skills to make a CNC 455 (or bigger) out of billet aluminum and while you're there add some strength and oiling system enhancements.
