we have a late model explorer(98 or 99)that we are puting a new trans in and we are about ready to put the new trans in but the converter doesnt seat far enough back. it does drop in 2 times like its suppose to but its still not far enough behind the flange. in the manual it said its suppose to be 1/2 inch behind the flang but its more like 1/2 inch ahead of it. and i dont want to put it on there and bolt it up and ruin the pump because its not far enough back. right now it does not have fluid in the trans only in the converter could this do something to make it not go far enough back? thanks for any help :D

ya this has been a pain since day one. nothing has gone right getting this trans out :blam: . i spent 6-8 hours trying to get just the top two bolts out in the trans :wtf: and i dont know if it can go back anymore. because i spent 1.5 -2 hours trying to get it to "Click" or seat one more time and nothing so i dont know if its that but it could. and my dad thinks it is because theres no oil in the trans but i dont know.

Well I can tell you it's not from having no oil in the trans! lol
If you still have your old t/c you could compare the two and make sure they are the same.

did you put some ATF on the input shaft? is the TC supposed to be clocked?

I don’t know if there the same but the new one came with the trans so I would think its the right one. and what do you mean by does the converter have to be clocked? not having oil in the trans wasn’t my idea it was my dads he said the pump might be spinning? I don’t know what that would do but I figured I might as well ask.

The t/c dosen't need "clocked"
Take a flashlight and inspect the inside of the pump, make sure the "tangs" look like they will line up with the hub of the converter. Use a couple screwdrivers or some needle nose pliers and make sure the "tangs" turn easily. Be careful not to damage the seal.
Look into the t/c with a flashlight and see if it looks like the stator support on the pump will fit the t/c. Make sure the input shaft is in correctly (not backwards) Take the input shaft out and see if it fits the converter, typically they only fit on one end. I realize this stuff is obvious and I know it could be hard to tell visually, but that's the best you can do aside from disassembly or using other known correct parts to check compatibility.
It could be worse! I removed and rebuilt a vr6 engine from a 1999 (I think) jetta, it was the worst nightmare I've ever seen! No wonder no other shops would touch it!
