the SS did not always have the 7.625 carriers and they did not always have 3.73. The SS had 3.42 and 7.5" carriers in 83 and 84.

My 88 SS Monte has the 7.625 and 26 spline axles. The ring gear is just .125 larger in diameter.
I was told by a past employee at Chevy Delavan (Axle plant in Buffalo) the 28 spline axles started in late 1988 when the G body was already out of production.

AFAIK You are correct. All g-bodies had 26 spline 7.5" except GN and 442 that got 8.5"

thanks for straightening that out, I guess it was just the F body who got the 7.625 with the 28 spline axles

I hate to say it, but none of this is really "required" at your power level. I wouldn't replace one part until it actually breaks.

But, if I was going to spend your money for you it would be on a 4L80E/Strange S60 combo.

Yes. Stock axle for the 8.5. Will slip right in the 28 spline 7.625 carrier.

I bet those are hard to find also? Is that the 8.5 g body rear end only or will the earlier camaros work also?

Easy to find. Moser sells them new. Inexpensive too.
