I actually had my wrist over / resting on the turn signal on one of my El Camino's back in the day. After my turn and it went to click back to the neutral position, something inside snapped and I had some sort of lighting issue - so I just replaced it. Very well could be the switch.

It very well could be... but before I dug into that mess, I'd probably get out my volt meter one more time and double check that both sides are equal at as many points as possible. You are rockin' a 30 year old wiring harness. Trace all wiring related to lighting before you start buying parts. Electrical issues are a night-mirror when it comes to cars.
Ok, Well I though I would pass this detail on to you because I found out myself how crazy this is.
On my 87 mc The front turn signals are in the front bumper. The lights that were in the side marker lamps
were removed and tied into 2 bullet lights on the sides of the fender. So when my parking lights are on
and the turn signal is on The lights alternate between the signal on the front bumper and the side light
Back and forth. When the running lights are NOT on only the turn signal lights in the front bumper work.
Wiring this up to work correctly was a nightmare to figure out. Until I found out the side marker lamps are wired
in reverse polarity.
