For 2k or less you might want to start looking at junkyards. You might be able to find a new long block for that.

i'd be interested in where i can buy a 400 period that crazy expensive.. doesn't have to be turnkey

Somebody makes a rotating assembly kit that you can turn certain 350 blocks into I think its a 415ci. The results for it have been outstanding. I can't remember who makes it but it was not priced too high nor was the machine work a nightmare but they had specific blocks to use. Not a super rare block but something you would probably have to look a bit to find.

Did a google; sbc 415 rotating assembly and found http://wildwestmodifiedtour.proboards.c ... thread=181 Most are expensive and show with aftermarket blocks

I will sell my factory chevy 400 sbc for 600 it rus but needs a valve job if 400s are so rare
400s arent all that rare and IMO $600 for an engine needing work is way high but it might be different where you live. When I was needing an engine I came across 3 400 blocks til I found mine. I paid $400 for a great running 400. Around here blocks are everywhere because people take the cranks and toss the rest

I assume they are doing that to make a 383? I have never understood why they would do that. You can buy a brand new 383 stroker crank for about the same price of buying and grinding a stock 400 crank.

Yea thats what I was getting at. I always thought the idea of a 406 or 421(?) stroker sounded better than a 383. Must just be me because there everywhere

A 400+ generally is better for a same rpm street car motor. But if you want to spin the snot out of it as in a race application the stronger 350 block makes for a better platform than a larger but flimsier 400. But agreed buy a stronger aftermarket crank/rotating assembly for less hassel more strength n better balance and the same general end cost.

so should i just keep an eye out on CL and in the yards? or is there a source for stock 400s
