So how do I excite it wink wink

do you have stock gauges?...if you do there is a light in the volt gauge that should go on when you start the car and go out when the car is started. If that light bulb is burnt or it does not go on then the alternator is not getting excited and will not charge. I run aftermarket gauges so I wired up the brown wire which excites the alternator to a switched source and put a resistor (85R) in that wire.

Mark,
You gotta stroke her...
All kidding aside, I pretty much did what Steve did. My brown wire that generally goes to the GEN light developed an open. The bulb stopped working. I took the cluster apart and changed the bulb for one that worked...still nada. Then I ran a new wire from a switched source (fuse panel) to the alternator and used a resistor inline. It charged at 14.5 volts.

I remember we did a whole thread on this subject.

Which brown wire are you referring to? Sorry the car isn't in front of me. I'm at work. I know there's the two on the plug then there's the brown or whatever color with ring terminal on post of alternator along with the red on same post to battery pos. Car is no factory gauges. Currently installed with ec82 resistor harness as the Ec80 stopped charging after a while

I'm referring to the smaller brown wire on the alternator plug. If you already have the conversion plug with the resistor included, then I would assume the brown wire is open. I would run a new wire to the fuse box using a +12 volt switched source. You can figure that out quickly with your trusty test light, or multimeter.
...or as a test, take the oil pressure switch lead and temporarily hook it up with a jumper wire to the E82 plug (brown wire).
That also being a switched +12 volt source should excite your alternator.
Start the car...connect your volt meter to the output. Should be putting out 14.5 volts.

So take it out of harness and put keyed 12v to it?

Leave the smaller wire on output of alternator?

Mark,
Disconnect the brown from the alternator. Using the plug with the resistor connected, add the +12 volt source to that.
In other words, you bypass the existing brown wire with a new wire to the switched voltage source. ..capisce?
