VIN tampering

Typical nonsense . . . this 1972 is a real 442 and considered a "resto mod" because it has after market wheels, custom seat covers, and Hotchkis lower control arms

No body off, needs lots of work under it and some in it.

$123,000 . . . I do NOT know what they are smoking but they seriously need to share some!

If the gray one falls through, here is where I'd prefer to start. I like these 72s. Very affordable. Nicely done frame off resto 72 Cutlass with a very nicely Thorsons built 455 turbo 400 w/AC for the wife even. And, you can resto mod the hell out of it without hurting its value just like, um, I cannot seem to get done on my '87. Or, just drive it . . .

This car is sharp . . .

Could eat off this undercarriage . . .

While we are dreaming [or maybe I am the only one dreaming? Someone e-slap me, I'll wake up!] . . . check out the link on this '66. The wife would hate it without AC and I don't like the white top on black interior but man what a cream puff. I tried to buy one of these at BJ a couple years back and couldn't get through their freakin nonsense remote bidding system. That one sold "in the tent" not on the block for only $28K so, though I went through all their preregistry BS, I missed out. They didn't bother to tell me, to buy in the tent as opposed to the ones that come across the block, you have to be there. Though it was not as nice as this one, it was quite nice, same color, and was a black top on black interior which I would prefer [or white on white would be fine too]. Check out the price on this one. Even more pissed at BJ now.

That was when I was also trying to buy this little truck that also sold "in the tent" for about the same money.

Yeah, and I "need" to just stay focused on my quite nice 87 I still have scattered all over the garage too. After the wife and I have taken care of all of our charitable obligations for the year, it seems to be that time of year when dreams happen . . . plus going on 2 years, I just miss driving! But, if that 71 is a real 442 never mind it's not all still numbers matched and I can get a couple other problems taken care of and come to terms on price, it will be a worthwhile purchase! Better than losing it again in the stock market.

Since I'm built like what?
Like you can afford a big money collector car.........
I'm just saying that I've grown very skeptical of the "collector" car market these days. There are so many flippers, clones, tributes, etc. out there that have gotten way out of hand for what they are. Someone told me once (I forget who) that there are probably more "SS" Camaros and Chevelles now than were ever actually built, which is very believable. I wouldn't even entertain the thought of buying a car from one of these collector car "dealers". They're only in it to make money, and you're already paying for the buying premium that they paid as well as their expected profit. There are a bunch that just can't afford to play in the Chevy market, and turned to off brands to make money. It's your cash; do what you want with it. I'm just trying to help steer you toward legitimate cars. Good luck!
Also, Dan Curtis had another car for sale that was very nice. There are only a handful of guys that I would trust selling restored Oldsmobiles with Dan being one of them.
This is a really good read that makes sense for anyone looking to buy an old Oldsmobile- https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums/general-discussion/72739-oldsmobile-essay.html

Well it depends on what you mean by “big money”?

Big money to some is $10K. Others it is 6 figures. Some it is a million. I am looking for a 2nd good driver classic car either Cutlass or Impala like my first ride in the $20-50K range. $20K clone or a $50K real documented 442 that perhaps just isn’t all there?

These dreamer 6 figure 442 cars are just nonsense I was throwing out there to make different points. Like they are not something you buy to drive or modify. You buy them to park in your personal museam.

Terri and I intend to drive this and my 87 both if I ever get it done as much as possible with what time I have left?

And also how, if not for Barrett Jackson’s BS, how I could have bought a 66 documented 442 nearly as nice as that one above that Gateway has priced at $100K for only $28K just 2 years ago. And like that cute little Model A truck we wanted to haul the local kiddies in the area parades. Another mid 20s steal I missed out on thanks to BJ.

Back to the purdy thread 442, they are trying just this morning to explain the illegible VIN tag as “normal” they see it all the time and sent me another one to prove their point that you couldn’t read just because it was just so filthy. Wrong! And they don’t have any documentation on the car so I suspect it is a “very nice” clone. $20-30K? I’m in. $50K? Not worth it (to risky to move it later for that kinda money)!

I think I’d be better off grabbing something like that 72 Supreme, great car, great motor, and nicely equipped. Can get it for $28K, maybe less? Even resto mod it and likely increase its value where a numbers match 442 you cannot touch or it loses value.

While I agree with the possibility of a vin tag being illegible if they don't have any documentation then consider it a nice clone and pay accordingly unless they can prove otherwise.
