Went & did some tire kicking

We had a transmission lesson today as I'm tired of moving his 4 speed everytime I had to move things from the one corner. Attached it to the spare bellhousing & onto the engine stand. Was suppose to been doing gaskets & seals but I forgot I didn't get them all yet. Instead it as on how to adjust shifter linkage of an ITM shifter & differences between it & thr Hurst Comp Plus. Now Jr. will know how to get the adjustment done as needed. Then showed him the "lift & shift" for reverse since my Hurst he has been practicing on doesn't. One thing I did notice is the shifter gate is looser than a lot of the girls I've came across in college. I'll need to look into the rebuild kits for factory installed Hurst shifters would work on an ITM as they both look the same.
Looser than college girls, you in some trouble hahaha

But they were Duquesne catholic girls so they weren't loose loose. Oh, what a minute. We'll have trouble then unless we keep away from the alcohol & we wear a glove while shifting.

I really shouldn't be talking bad about my alamata but...

I didn't have good sun light yesterday so I didn't give everything a good look over until today. Have some orange peel on the flat panel & where the edge of the trunk lid will cover but what gets covered by the plate door looks really good. Color looks pretty even but a hair lighter than the original paint on the inside of the trunk lid. For now I'll still show Jr. how to wet sand with it & install it so I can get some pics to try an attempt to get the antique registration done. Now if the OCD kicks in it'll get repainted.
Then we spent some time in the car working on ideas he wants to do. Every so often he says he wouldn't mind if the interior was changed to black. I told him if we did he might have to have vinyl seat & explained to him black vinyl & hot weather is not a nice combination. But we talked about maybe working black into it with the seatbelts, steering wheel & column going black & maybe the carpet. Then his tunes is another worry of his cause you have to have music. It was a nice evening with him in the car.

Had our wet sanding class this evening. Started on the tail light covers since they're going to need a repaint. Jr. got to see the steps & how the surface goes through the change from rough to smooth along with hitting low spots a little too long. Afterwards a quick rubbing with McGuire's #9 to bring back a shine. Then I got on to the plate filler. All was good until I found thin paint. Didn't wet sand everything because of this. So OCD says repaint cause we need it to look good for Jr. Still did the same with sanding & rubbing. Looks good but not to the standard I expect. Didn't get pics of the covers but here is the plate filler.

Finally got somewhere with getting the PPG interior dye/paint today. Sucking up some pride & stopping in at the former employer (my old store) to see if they still were able to mix the One Choice. Was at first it was running into the the lack of knowlage that this stuff exsist. Called the main store to kinda get somewhere. Then had the one owner call saying they didn't mix it but they did mix SEM but only at the Cleveland Ohio store. OK accepted defeat Ifigure Jr.'s recoloring looks to be SEM spray bombs. But surprises happen, my old store called me back just before closing & said the New Kensington Pa store (40 minutes away) has everything to mix it & has all the formulas. So this morning a quick call, trip to the store & now we got a quart to match the dash. This will now get our next paint projects which will be the column, steering wheel, gauge cluster & speaker grills. Would be nice it add the new dash to that list but gotta wait on OPGI to get the black ones in. Then I have to remember the right ratio to mix the gloss & flt clears together to get the right low gloss.

Got a few small paint jobs done this weekend. Painted the front sway bar, Grand Prix bar, Z-bar frame bracket, lower section of the steering column & the later radio/HVAC bezel. Was able to get all the correct tork head screws for the grill, head light bezels & plate lights. Started to clean up the Chevette two spoke wheel to get it ready to become camel tan but need some fresh vinyl cleaner. This was a solo weekend as Jr. had some time to spend with the grandparents & mom. I am coming to the comclusion I'll need to put feelers out there for either a pair of '78-'80 coupe front shoulder belts or swap out to full set of '86-'88 tan belts (plastic buckels & trim). Might have a review on the OPGI '78-'80 dash as they listed having some black ones in stocl & ready to ship. I'll check in with them tomorrow to make sure ours is shipping from that group.

Well, it was "web site error" for OPGI listing the black pads as being limited stock but ready for delivery last week so no dash anytime soon. But I was able to get the call the other shade of camel is mixed & ready for pick up. We're going to pick it up tomorrow morning. Dug out some front speaker grills to find a good pair to use just to find one that I thought was long gone 30 years ago, one from my '79 Monte. Guess my brother must of pulled it before our dad sold it out from under me while I was at basic training. Also was working on the extra grils to see which would be the better of the two. Then I over paid for a pair of new quarter window lower seals with the thin molding. Not listed as NOS since they don't have packaging but I'm thinking thay are since no one ever repoped.

Since it finally had the rain ended around here I started to work on the paint on the trunk lid to find the best spot to get scanned at the one paint shop to get a better mix match. Will try for the next couple evenings to try to rub & buff corner I started on to try to get it as smooth & clean with a good shine. There is a good spoy on the inside but the finish quality of a metallic color on inner panels were not as much of a worry when new. His has signs of metallic sag in a few spots. It's going to suck to take the lid off but it's the easiest panel to take off & take in. I do regret painting the tail light access panels but a lesson learned for Jr. to check color shade before painting. Also shows when you haven't done something for a long time you'll forget things.

Then last week I broke down & bought off Ebay what should be NOS lower quarter window seals with the narrow trim bead. Didn't come in GM packaging but was in a sealed plastic bag. For the final cost they were priced as NOS. Seller has the ones for the wider trim but have to reuse the trim & also has the vertical ones. Both are also priced like NOS. This is the sellerI also got the plate pocket side trim & Landau/crest emblems.

Had another disappontment with the paint this morning. Had Jr. help me remove the trunk lid so we could get a color match with the PPG scanner at the old job as they are the only local PPG shop open on a Saturday. Cleaned up & rubbed out a few spots on the out side & a spot on the inside. First try on the out side couldn't pull a match at all. Hit the inside close but not blendable. Then I had the guy hit a radom spot was the closest but was off from what they had on file. Only would match to the DBC line, no Omni at all. He tried to sell me on mixing DBC but not in the budget (over $300/pint, $400/quart, $1000/gallon!!!) I told him I'l have to dig in some more to find something close. Then he said I won't get a good match since it was repainted in the past cause of the over spray in the cavity openings. Had to explain it what was sprayed back in the fall of '78 in Baltimore. All original paint on it. He'll try again to have PPG send Omni formulas. I can't understand why a company that is so big into automotive finishes would dump formulas or make it harder to have acces to them. Even with the paint matching. When I worked there I only had one car I couldn't get close enough to blend. I'll have to look at a few online sources & see if the do spray outs to ensure it'll be a close match.

Set up a temporary deal with the trunk. Put the spare white one on after removing the lock cover & lock since there's no key. I'll try the Colours location near work to see if they know how to find a closer brown in the color library.
