Rubbing alcohol is weaker. 🤣🤣🤣 Besides, it's a good Polish treat. At Wigilia we usually we have homemade pickes or kielbasa slices as a chaser. Another use is to stuff a few cherries into the bottle then take it as a shot as is after it marinates a month or two.

In my younger days we drank more of it. Now it's (usually) reserved for special occasions. When you do the math though a shot of it is only around 2.4 shots of vodka.

Besides, I bought the weaker version. If you Google it, there's a brand of spirytus vodka that clocks in at 200 proof. We get the 192. There's also a lesser one, but don't know any poles myself who drink it.

Going to have to search it out the next time I'm shopping and give it a try.

The 192 is what you get if you leave the cap off. It’s what makes American gas turn into jello when it ages.

It lives up to the stereotype where you see the eastern Europeans in movies drinking (insert characters here) under the table relatively easily. IiRC the low proof stuff has a different color label, then the green label is the higher proofs.

I don't think anything above 192 is sold in the states though, you've got to bring that back in the suitcase.

When my Dad was in the rehab hospital after the war, the rubbing alcohol was drinkable. They bought the stuff in 45 gallong drums and decanted it into smaller containers as necessary. Only the nurses and the doctors were supposed to have access to what was supposed to be a high security locker for the stuff, But Dad mentioned that one of the other guys on the ward had figured out how to crack the lock! Apparently orange juice got to be really popular for a while until someone got wise to the whole deal. Don't think they ever figured out who poached the hootch though.

The local liquor stores still sell pure grain alcohol in gallon bottles across the counter. if you are doing some kind of jungle juice or spiking watermelons, the stuff is as good as any.

Oh, yeah, for the Canadians out that way, Edmonton in Alberta Cda is having its annual beer festival once again. Didn't happen last year--Covid. Lots of boutique breweries and small batch businesses.
