So am I but in my dads case, i dont think i have ever seen him change the oil in his 94 caravan...as a matter of fact he tops it off with all of my old oil. and hes pushing 350k.. and it still runs like a champ...the dam computer went out before he ever had any kind of motor problem. the besides it burning a little oil, power steering pump going out hes never touched it the dam engine or transmission fluid for that matter... i dont think i could ever bring my self to do that..

I wonder if GM is still using flat tappet cams in any of their production engines........

I sat in a seminar from GM a few months ago on the new Duramax, about halfway through the topic kinda changed to oil and GM recommends Mobil 1 full synthetic for everything, in fact a lot of new cars are coming with Mobil 1 0w30 and a standard 7500 mile change intervals. I switched to Mobil 1 in my truck and noticed the cold start lifter tick went away, currently I run Pennzoil 10w30 in the big block with a fram and the same in the 307.

Not that I know of, I'm pretty sure everything went to roller in the late 80s and early 90s.

What about a new engine? Ive heard tell that using synthetic oils in new engines can create ring sealing issues... opinions?
ALOT OF THE NEW GM CARS AND OLDER ONES AS FAR AS THAT GOES COME FROM THE FACTORY WITH MOBIL 1. CORVETTE, LS3 CAMARO, CTSV. I WOULD THINK IF IT CAUSED A BREAK IN ISSUE GM WOULDN'T DO IT.

those engines are broken in before going into the car.

Hate to break the news to yea but not all engines that are produced are broken in before going into a car or truck for that matter. In fact when a new vehicle is put together at the plant the QC at the end of the line takes the vehicle on a 4-5 mile test drive on a track with a checklist and it has to meet all the criteria or it doesn't get shipped out. Most of the engines are started for the first time at this point. Most good dealerships will also point out the break in procedure for the engine in the owners manual when you buy the vehicle. On 2011 Gm vehicles they have also come out with their own oil called Dexos 1, which they claim to surpass all other oils, if there are any issues with the engine or lubrication of the engine GM will not warranty it unless the customer has used Dexos 1, and yes of course it costs more.

Comma semi synthetic 10w 40 for mine @ £16 for 5 liters for me.
Bet you can't get it over there 🙂 .

Roger.

Rotella T 10-30.

You do realize all the new motors are hyd rollers, right? So zinc (more actually, zddp) is a non issue. So yes, NEW motors are fine with ANY oil. They do not need the same stuff the older motors, or ANY motor with a flat tappet, needs.

Looks like Rotella T 10w30 is what I'll be looking for when buying oil. It is relatively inexpensive & walmart carries it (most of the time) but I'm wondering if or when it will no longer be available ??
