What did you do at work today?

I was able to powdercoat some more personal stuff at work on Saturday, and I've gotta say it's great getting paid to paint your own car parts.

The color on these headers is Black Denim (high temp) and it has a bit of texture as the name implies. Normally you'd put on a bit more for a slightly more pronounced look, but I didn't want powder that thick.

Everything else is the same gloss black I've been using on my other personal items.

One of the guys heard a wierd nose under the shop truck so the boss sent me under there to have a look.

Chevy 2500HD 2wd, all the rollers from the DS Carrier Bearing are gone so it was grinding race on race.

Well that can’t be good. Nothing like getting every mile out of it. Kinda like when the rubber blew off my shock.

We have over 40 welders and an entire crew of press and laser operators here as well but most of them have been peeled off for use on a big contract order, leaving the second string to supply us with things to paint and assemble. We also receive a substantial amount of parts via truck but things have slowed there as well for some reason. My partner and I seem to paint faster than they can feed us lately so we've been searching for things to keep us in the booth, which means we get to do "The Skittles Challenge" today. I call it that because we're doing a bunch of small orders and some medium, all of which are different colors- "taste the rainbow" indeed. We break down the guns and clean the entire booth between each color but we've got ten 60L hoppers plumbed to manifolds on the booth wall so we just hook up to whichever color we need if it's already in a hopper. There are two more hoppers hooked to another booth we're not using and swapping them over is a plug and play operation. That was necessary twice.

If we don't already have the color in a hopper we break that down and clean it, purge the lines, and proceed as normal. We did that a few times.

For jobs that don't justify cleaning a big hopper we have this little guy, and we sprayed 8 different colors from it today.

Here are some of the colors we use often enough to earn their own magnet to avoid mix-ups.

And we have plenty of colors to choose from.

In all, we shot 67 payloads in 15 different colors today and still put out nearly double what either of the other shifts accomplish. But I stuck with plain ol' gloss black for these five sway bars of mine. There are two 32 mm F41, one 7/8" F41, and two 34 mm hollow F Body bars all burned, blasted, and powder coated on company time and at their expense. I think I started writing this around 10 this morning and just now got an opportunity to finish- I ran my *ss off at work today and the reward was well worth it. It's a bad picture though. I'd take another but they're in my trunk now and I'm gonna go become one with a chair.

how come I don't see Tony Nancy Yellow or Piss Yellow? 😁

I've somehow gone my whole life without ever seeing that movie but it's going on the Watch List immediately. We have some unofficial names for a few of the colors but management was visibly uncomfortable with Rapeseed Yellow (deliberately pronounced it incorrectly even after being corrected) because they're pretentious prudes so we don't write things like "Devil Dick Red" or "Flesh Hammer Blue" in Sharpie. The majority of our guys come from work release so everything is sexually explicit. Some of the actual names for colors are pretty wild but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.
