I felt the same way an extra set of hands would have really helped wrestling the trans back in. But I must admit I cheated and cut the ears off the side of the bell housing to make it easier to squeeze between my headers.got the converter spun on the trans and got it in the car.i think angling the trans helped it index better than last time.i didn't have any issues.FTI actually included a spec sheet of converter pads to bellhousing meaurements.that was cool to have.getting the trans in by myself wasn't as bad as i thought it was but i could of used another set of hands or another jack at least.still progress is progress..
Do you turn clockwise or counter clockwise?Try adjusting the modulator. We used to back the screw out til it was just below flush with the end.
Should help it shift later .

That is what I saw somewhere else that is why I was asking to confirm which way is correctI thought clockwise ran it in. You worded that weird. I had to back mine out so it would shift at all part throttle. My dad had run the screw way in there, probably in an effort to get it to shift higher WOT.
Sorry, but you should unscrew it. Counter clockwise. This should make it shift later.

How much to adjust vacuum modulator?
I did a search and found that to make my TH400 shift later I need to tighten the flathead screw in the vacuum modulator clockwise. Is this a micro-adustment or does it take full turns to get a significant difference? For example, the secondary valve spring in a Quardajet is a micro-adjustment...www.chevelles.com
To adjust the shift points of the transmission, disconnect the vacuum hose. With a flat blade screw driver turn the screw on the inside of the modulator end clockwise to raise the shift points and firm up the shifts. To lower the shift points turn the screw counter clockwise, this will also soften the shifts. Only turn the screw two full turns at a time, reconnect the vacuum line to the modulator, and then test drive the vehicle. Re-adjust if necessary.
