You're assuming the people in charge of all this knows what they're doing. I also believe that there are potholes in this venture when upscaled that are yet unseen. When I used to have to go to a job, I've done several test labs on small scale processes and while in theory it should have worked the same when you went full scale, you don't find the holes until you do. For instance, the discussions always talk about fuel savings, etc., etc., like cost per charge and so forth. But all of it's based on what costs are NOW. Guess what? Electricity costs will go up when demand goes up. It's not like electricity generation comes out of thin air. Someone's going to cash in. Which means all your electric sh*t is going to cost more to operate. How much more? At this point, it's going to be a toss-up because nobody really knows for sure.

So why don't they wait 5-8 years before making people wait too long for a recharge? I keep hearing words like "eventually" and "in so and so many years from now"... People aren't going to accept it if it's not an almost drop-in replacement, which is what most people will expect. The real bugger is going to be at what cost? It's not like some of these EV's are cheap. And they can't be subsidized forever. Economy of scale to help reduce costs may be on the horizon, but for how long? 5-8 years is a lifetime in electronic junk years.

I can see it now. In order to survive, Jeg's and Summit will be selling narrow and wide-ratio resistor packs for your manual transmission. Your shifter will be set up like the resistor bank for the heater fan. You think you're rowing gears, but actually just moving the switches to align resistors.

And I'm not waving any canes. I said I wasn't anti-EV, I'm just not sold on them yet. And anything that has self-driving mode (like the insipid Supercruise) can't be that exciting to ride in. I still believe we will have gas/oil cars into the next decade at least. May not be new, but they'll be there. How else can we prove the Road Warrior movies to be true? And then I'll probably quit driving anyway and move to my EV wheelchair.
I trust Elon is trying to make something fantastic and is pushing the boundries of available technology to do so. Thats as far as my trust extends in this field. No tinfoil hats today.

Its about $18 to charge a EV at home right now, thats quite a bit less than a tank of diesel for the Dodge, its not a replacement but it is a tool that has its ideal usage. As for upgrades, no one can argue that EV's have impressive performance for 1/4 mile fun. The stupid tri-motor Cybertruck is like a 10 second 1/4... lol

First let me say, I like the rumble and feel the internal combustion engine gives. However, I am not opposed to the electric motor to power our vehicles. The thing I don't like is the manipulation from the governing powers to force us in that direction. We got away from using whale oil because the country (and world) warranted it. Not because the governing powers forced it to be. We created the combustion engine because there was a market for it.
I went on a test drive with my son in a Tesla and was very impressed at the overall car. The acceleration was instant. The features the car provided were futuristic. almost mind blowing the things it did. The car will plot a route so you can charge the car along your trip if you are driving across country. With that being said, "those governing powers to be" wanting to kill the very thing that produces electric (coal) and use alternatives such as solar and wind has not advanced to the point of being warranted on a mass scale will end up costing the user more in the long run. While this is an option for some, electric vehicles are not the option for all. Someday this will be the norm much like the combustion engine is now and our descendants will look back in amazement at how primitive our time was. Much like we do now about 100 years ago.

Elon publicly said he wants to outlaw all manually driven cars as he considers them death machines. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Having driven professionally for around 22 years, thats a well founded idea. Most people are TERRIBLE drivers.

I agree though, I disagree with the consequences that will bring, until they Thaw out Simon Fenix and society changes.

It's called progress, things move on. Stop the whining about the future. If it wasn't for progress, you would be driving a two-horse powered wagon. Do I miss my 70 Chevelle; yes but then it was noisy, hard driving and uncomfortable.

This isn't exactly apples to apples here. EVs also come with a plethora of tech and automation that I want nothing to do with. I also don't think there will be a cheap retrofit option for older stuff. And the EVs are hell on the environment to make and dispose of when compared with their ICE counterparts. If this whole thing weren't about the almighty dollar and were actually about fixing a problem without creating even more a lot of us wouldn't feel the way we do.

And then we'll have OLDSMOBILE back again roaming the streets of San Angeles! A 1970 Oldsmobile 442 with 4 hundred 55 cubic inch engine, radial tires, an-and bucket seats!
A thing of beauty!

I think its going to be fun to remove the safeties and integration on electric stuff. Its older tech then combustion engines, someone is going to make it way quicker and more unsafe!
