I planned to go grab a monte SS steering box from one of the local parts stores, usually around 125 exchanged with your old one. After reading the reviews left on the parts store pages, people are having issues with them having the shaft not centered and others the steering wheel doesn't go back to center. Anyone on here have some experience with one that did not have issues? This is on a frame up build and I will likely not drive this for at least a year so I do not want to install it and find out later that it is messed up. Thanks

I do not know about errors or whatever, that came from reviews online from people I do not know. I would like to know who is selling a box that should not have issues out of the box. I have 3 engine builds and a frame up restoration going on, career that takes 50-60 hours a week, kids, woman, house, boats... I do not have time to be messing with manufacturers selling stuff that is not right, I want to bolt it in and forget about it.

Since fleming442 isn't going to be the d1ck here, I will temporarily take his place. :) If you're worried about the parts store rebuild, and you believe the horror stories coming from the reviews, then find another parts store. Simple as that.

I'm not trying to pooh pooh on your expectations, but you need to be ready for ANYTHING when you buy parts off anyone that has a part that's been rebuilt, or even over the counter at the GM dealer. Especially at the local auto parts box stores. 99% of the time the guy who rebuilt it is nowhere near the vendor peddling the stuff and may have done it 6 months ago or more and most likely used the cheapest seal kits and parts out there. For $125 and exchange, don't expect the best out of the box. I never do. Only way it's going to be right is if you check it right out of the box yourself. If you don't, it's ok. Any defects aren't going anywhere.

If you get one from a tried and true steering/suspension specialist, I'd bet that would be your best bet on getting one right directly out of the box. You'll pay for that convenience, most likely.

If I didn't find an NOS one for my project, I'd likely have scrounged up the rebuild parts to do it myself. That way I know if it's screwed up, I'm the one to blame.

You can bolt it in and forget about it, but any issues will still be there waiting for you when you get around to it if there are any. Rebuilt parts are just that- with no guarantee they'll be maintenance free. That's the only advice I can give you.

Worse case scenario you can go with these people. However, It will cost you dearly, but they have an excellent reputation. https://leepowersteering.com/ or check with Detroit Speed.

I bought two new boxes from advance auto. Rockauto also sells them but going to the local auto parts saved me the shipping for the core. The brand is Lares. They have a website.

Do you have a NAPA nearby? I can't vouch for them lately, but years ago when I bought Echlin stuff from them it was very good quality that could be trusted to fit and function. That's the only place I know that you may have a good shot at getting a quality rebuilt one.

NAPA part number for Monte SS box: NSP 88277101 Website says 128.99 with exchange.

Houston, TX.
AGR is a quality source as well, but on the pricey side, like LEE. I'd go with the NAPA box, myself.
