If you're worried about the parts store rebuild, and you believe the horror stories coming from the reviews, then find another parts store. Simple as that.
I'm not trying to pooh pooh on your expectations, but you need to be ready for ANYTHING when you buy parts off anyone that has a part that's been rebuilt, or even over the counter at the GM dealer. Especially at the local auto parts box stores. 99% of the time the guy who rebuilt it is nowhere near the vendor peddling the stuff and may have done it 6 months ago or more and most likely used the cheapest seal kits and parts out there. For $125 and exchange, don't expect the best out of the box. I never do. Only way it's going to be right is if you check it right out of the box yourself. If you don't, it's ok. Any defects aren't going anywhere.
If you get one from a tried and true steering/suspension specialist, I'd bet that would be your best bet on getting one right directly out of the box. You'll pay for that convenience, most likely.
If I didn't find an NOS one for my project, I'd likely have scrounged up the rebuild parts to do it myself. That way I know if it's screwed up, I'm the one to blame.
You can bolt it in and forget about it, but any issues will still be there waiting for you when you get around to it if there are any. Rebuilt parts are just that- with no guarantee they'll be maintenance free. That's the only advice I can give you.
