Why do people resist posting their location in their profiles?

I respect people's attempt to maintain their privacy while interacting on the Forum. I also respect that if someone shares their address, phone number, email, etc. in a PM that I don't disclose that information on the regular Forum if they do not already publish it there. The Internet lost its virginity a long time ago, and the databases of the world are cumulative. A modest amount of paranoia is prudent these days.

Brian,
I agree with you. I think it should be mandatory. Why do people feel that they have to play secret agent. We're all grown ups here...allegedly.

When I was a moderator at Maliburacing several years back, I always requested people to disclose their locations...and even post their first name. What's the harm in it?

I wouldn't ask anyone to disclose their street address, full names, etc. There should be a certain degree of privacy..

I fear that if people know where I live someone might try and steal my Monte and attempt to return it back to original stock condition.

There is some risk if you live in a small town, have an expensive toy, and think you are safe out in the boonies. Google Earth can help a crook find a lot of easy pickings. But if you want to find me in NYC good luck. That said, I like seeing who's close by.

I know this was tongue in cheek, but the ones that really baffle me are the plate-coverers on forums and ads. Because, you know, people couldn't see it every day while it's being driven around. IMO, much more to fear from a local dirtbag car thief than an internet stalker that is half a country away....at least for the average car. Exotics and high theft rate cars I could understand.

Mostly, I just wondered why on a forum when people are trying to buy or sell parts/cars or asking about sources for parts, they wouldn't have their location included.

I think at least a state should be listed, you can always have a conversation with someone if for some reason you need to know a more exact location.
I remember a while back someone asking about rim size fitment and did not post a location and he kept asking about 10 x 15 rims and later mentioned he was from another country.
