I have a '79 that came with a 305 that has been long gone in favor of a '80 350. The OEM exhaust headers were compatable at the time of the swap.

Now I'm looking at Edelbrock's Tubular Exhaust Systems Headers. Their website specifies they are for 1983-88 Monte Carlo/El Camino.

Anyone have experience with these? I am unsure of why they won't work on mine.

Thanks!

Steve

Well technically they will fit however they are emission specific. that means they have air tubes for an airpump. I have these , do yourself a favor and just get a set of reg. headers the cheaper shorty headers the driver side hangs just a little lower to clear stock crossmember.

The El Camino floorboards are different than a Monte Carlos

Also I believe the El Camino is 9 inches longer than the Monte

OK, this is what I've learned:

The technicians at Edelbrock tell me that their tubular exhaust system (TES) will fit all years of last generation ('78-'87) El Caminos. They are emissions compliant in all 50 states.

I'm a novice at this. I should have had more confidence in Edelbrock. Their current inventory is specific to 83-88 and is silent as to '78-'82. They could not explain why no '78-'87 were listed. I've received the TES and the only difference I see is that the passenger side has four AIR injector ports instead of two on my OEM. I suspect the reason no '78-'87 were listed is a supply and demand business decision.

I live in the Phoenix, AZ, area and the emissions standards piggyback off California. I spoke to the Arizona AQED technician responsible for aftermarket specifications and he said that as long as all emissions devices are connected and operating the determining factor will be that it passes the tail pipe emisssions test.

I can't see why they won't work. As stated earlier, the El Camino has a longer wheelbase, but that shouldn't affect the fit of the Edelbrock TES in the engine bay area. I think that you're on the right track with your thinking that as long as all of your emission controls are hooked up and working, and your car passes the emission test, then you should be fine. I'm running the Edelbrock TES on my '84 Monte SS (yes, I know that its made for it), and it works fine.
