Working on the wagon..

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your suggestion and approval on the ACC carpet. I think they're the best game in town. I have noticed other companies, but these people seem to have a good, long standing reputation.
I think I will ask for a few samples. That's pretty much what I did when I ordered headliner fabric. Once you make a choice and place the order, it's pretty much a done deal.
I've also looked at Trim Parts, they also deal in carpeting, but I have a feeling it's probably made by ACC. Have you dealt with them directly, or through a vendor?
I know there's quite a choice in colors...it can drive you batty. The color I want should be an OEM color. In fact, I have a sample I could even send them. It's in the burgundy/ maroon family.
I guess I should also go for the mass backing.

Any new developments on your car? I haven't seen you post in a while. I know it's been a hot summer.

Thanks again for all the information. BTW, I guess for the cargo compartment carpet...say that fast three times..., will they be able to make it up for you, or just have an upholstery shop do it? I have a cargo floor piece that I can use as a pattern.
Thanks for suggesting having mats made, too. That's a great idea.

Hey Jack,

Been poking around on my car a little. Like you said, been too hot for anything serious. Funny the Eastern seaboard/Midwest guys got the winter to contend with and we have the summer of all things.

Trim parts makes some good stuff. I'm betting their carpet is ACC reboxed or straight up ACC. I'd ask to be sure though. Like I said, of all the cars I've done, I've always used ACC and have not been disappointed. Samples is definitely the way to go. Like you said, once it lands in your zip code it's pretty much a done deal. Might as well make sure it's the color you want. I'm sure glad I did. I haven't purchased yet but if I would have bought what I thought was right based on the internet photos, I would have been disappointed.

You bring up a good point on the mass backing. Originally I wasn't going to have the carpet mass backed but after I've thought about it, in my opinion, the mass backing makes the carpet lay better and hold the shape (I think). Reason I wasn't going to use it was for the additional weight. I'm over that now.

As far as the load floor carpet, the original piece has vinyl sewn around the edges if I recall. I don't remember, I know I have it rolled up under the bench some where. If that's the case, the carpet joint can probably make that piece with the right measurements. Haven't got that far Jack. You're a few months ahead of me at this point. If not, I'm sure there's someone local that can do that. I know people have runners and small door mats made for their homes all the time from left over carpet.

Well I'm glad at least one of us will be burning gas soon. Talk to you soon Jack. ...

Hey Scott,
It has been pretty hot lately...a little too hot to feel motivated. I try to at least get a few things accomplished in the AM. The past few days were hotter than it's been all summer long. Combine that with the humidity and your motivation is next to nil.

I will definitely request a few samples before I pull the trigger. Better to be sure than sorry. I tried looking into Trim Parts a bit more, and it seems as though they mold their own carpet, judging by their description. They don't mention "mass backing", but they call it poly backing, which is probably the same process, or principal. I think the mass backing actually helps as far as retaining the molded shape...that's my assumption anyway. It does add weight to the carpeting, though.
My old OE carpeting had a sort of poly/ plastic backing. I'd like to be able to simulate that.

I can't believe how much work is entailed in completing the interior alone... I still have to remove the cargo floor once again. This time I will try to get some help. The last time I pulled it out, I did it by myself...what a bear. I'd like to complete the sound deadening job underneath the floor, paint the floor using the interior color ad re-installing it.
I also have the side panels that cover the wheel wells to prep and paint yet. I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, however.
I will most likely order some matching yardage for the cargo floor. I may even cut it to shape according to my old piece of carpet and have a shop(or someone) sew the binding around it. Perhaps I can save a few denaros.

You've certainly have gotten a lot done on your wagon. I know you want to do it right. I hope you're able to accomplish more in the coming months.
Talk to you soon, my friend. 😀

Hey Jack,

Rather than hijack your thread I posted all the carpet detail in my build. Wasn't sure you wanted all the extra photos of brown carpet. Anyway, when you get a minute you can have a look. Hopefully it'll save somebody some work somehow. ...

Thanks Scott,
I will certainly check it out.

Got my new carpeting from Stock interiors recently, and I'm pleased with the way it looks so far. It's gradually starting to look like a car again. 😀
I know the breadbox is crooked, it still needs to be fastened to the console body. I also plan to do the carbon fiber treatment to the shifter bezel. breadbox door, and gauge surround.

looking factory fresh there jack!!! glad i could help out with the measurements  heres some pics of a shifter plate i did about 4 years ago for one of my homies SS's.do you have the lil breadbox mount/bracket(the bb attaches to it with a screw/bolt in the back)?i have a couple if you need one,pm me a shipping adress and ill get it to you.PLEASE keep the progress pics coming!!!

Thanks Doug. Maybe I'll actually get to drive it this year. 🙂
