Wrong timing?

I looked at a while before it dawned on me. I always use the keyway as a reference point to make sure I'm have it set up...and you guys can just run a tab cause I'm bound to loose at least a few..

I'm glad gregidea was checking so it's an easy fix now and not after he's got it in the car trying to figure it out...

Spin it over a little bit and see if there isn't another dot that resembles the one on the cam gear. Didn't look closely at the pic before and I haven't seen a dot like that before that i can recall anyhow.

the dot is on the tooth that's in the chain...I'll put a buck on that..

That or on the backside of the gear.

That's what the problem was. I guess the dot i have pictured is for balancing purposes. There was a little dot just like the one on the cam gear...just hidden under some gunk. Got it all straightened out now.

She still won't turn over though. The starter is very sluggish. After about two slow spins, it just couldn't spin the motor anymore. I got a few bangs out the exhaust, so I at least know I'm close. I'll let you all know how this finally turns out. Thanks again for all the help.

Slow rolling over and popping usually indicates timing is way off. Of course you checked to make sure you've got a good battery and connections right? If spinning the distributor doesn't help find a sweet spot where it will start then my bet would be it is a tooth off on the cam to distributor gear. Not a big deal just re install the distributor if that were the case. Good luck.

Boy were you right about it being too far advanced. I completely forgot that since the cam had to be repositioned, the distributor I had previously stabbed was way off. I still have the same issue of the sluggish starter. Tried a brand new one on it, and still couldn't spin it much at all. I will be trying thicker cabled tomorrow. But I'm thinking that the engine is just too tight right now. Would you all recommend I try out a high-torque starter on this thing?

Hi torque starters usually arent needed unless you have very high compression. A stock starter should be just fine. Check wiring and grounds. Once those are verified good and your battery has a good charge then see about spinning the distributor and see if it will start.
