I apologize in advance if this topic has been beaten to death but I failed to find anything in my search.

I am building a 406 with hopefully over 400 horsepower and surely much more torque. Aside from that, my t5 transmission gears do not match up with whatever the really low stock 10 bolt ratio is 2.73~? (It doesnt matter.) I need to upgrade and I want something I dont have to worry about.

It would be nice to have minimal modifications to make, but I can weld and fabricate if necessary. Ive heard good things about ford axles, but I dont have a clue where to start looking.

Greatly appreciate any help.

sounds like you've already got some coin in the powertrain ... I'd just contact Currie Enterprises or Moser about having a complete 12 bolt or Ford 9" made.

That sounds like it would cost a couple grand haha. I haven't invested much yet honestly. The car doesnt deserve a brand new axle (if its out of budget) , it would be far too inconsistent with the condition of all the other components. I thought there were beefier stock axles people swapped in. I know the GNX/turbo regal axles are popular but Ive checked the local yards and it didn't look promising.

I suspect you have a T5 WC but that won't take much more than 300 lbs torque. You can upgrade it to take alot more without too much $$$ tho

There are few options for "bolt in" on G bodies sadly, basically the 7.5 that is in the car or the 8.5 from a GN, HO etc. Sadly the 8.5 for G bodies are getting harder to find and are commanding a premium price.

What sort of budget are you looking for in the rear? I'm guessing from your last response $1000+ is out of line so no new refurb axles like the ones from some suppliers. This kind of limits your options unless you can find a good condition 8.5 for a bargain.

Your options at this point are rebuild the 7.5 with stronger guts and 28 spline axles. Not the best supported idea around here though some have done it. Another option is find something like an old 12 bolt from something like a Chevelle and do the work to modify that to fit. This is actually what I am doing with my car currently with a 12 bolt I got from a car from '68. This option does require different offset wheels on the rear and changing out the upper arms for the axle as the angles don't match up quite right.

Another rear that some have played with in modifying for the G body is the Ford 8.8 rear.

Youre gonna have a tough time finding a 8.5 or 9" rear for cheap. I know jegs sells currie ( i think ) 9" bolt on rears, but they are without all the guts, and i think just the housing alone is over a grand. Gbodyparts.com sells used 8.5's out of grand nationals for 950 posi 650 non posi.

Ah, I was afraid of this. Sounds like another "make something work" scenario. I would like to put a cap of around a grand. And I'd only spend that in one spot if it was absolutely guaranteed to handle the power I may throw at it. I dont know what those GN rear ends are rated at.

As far as building the stock rear-end. What is the downfall to that? Where is the weak link if you replace all of the components inside? Would there even be considerable savings? I'm definitely interested in what you do with that chevelle rear-end, rebel, and how much you end up spending.

I'm looking for a 10" b body rear...I have my new boxed frame just sitting there so I'd like to set up the rear end cause it'd be alot easier to modify the upper arm to suit the angle of the ears on the b body rear...I'm almost tempted to set it up with 3 link to get rid of the rear steer on corners...... 12" rears are nice but I don't need that kind of strength and it's just be unnecessary weight to carry around

Ok this is what i did for my build . I am running a 464 (buick 455 .38 over) and is mostly used for drag racing at local track I got a set of moser axles for a GN and a posi rear out of an 89 camaro 7 5/8 i believe added a set of 3.42 gears. Now some said it will be ok for the street and street tires wont last the first pass w drag tires, well 50 plus passes later with d/s wheel off the ground and its still together and all i have in it is about umm lets see ...175 axles (fellow racer), jy DIFF 40, Bearings n seals 25, diff additive 5.50 so 245 bucks for a so called wont last rear end. And i plan to run it all this year as well. I enjoy it when i can prove people wrong lol. (475 plus hrse with 535 plus trq. on a 10 bolt 7 5/8 diff)
