it went up to 18-20" it is definitely not enough

I am going to do a pump

we tested it today by running a vacuum line from my buddy's 87 s10 RWD blazer to my brake booster and running the s10 and checking the brakes and yes the booster is functioning correctly therefore I need more vacuum at the booster...

could there possibly be a vacuum leak in my car...highly doubt it because if I unplug the hose it spikes the idle up high and when u plug it back up it drops the idle down. so I just think the cam simply can't make enough vacuum at idle or low RPM for that matter.

I personally hate wiring as well but it is doable. My boss knows the G-body better than anyone i ever met , he was a tech for GM in the 80s, in fact he took a piece of paper and off of memory drew out all the wiring harnesses, colors and order off of memory...

my boy also has a electronics business and is insane with wiring so he could always help me out if need be

also the dash apparently does not need to be removed to do the carpet so I will just address that at a later time once the car is drivable (all electronics functioning, new cluster that I am making installed, fully functioning brakes, etc;)
especially cause at that time i might do a bucket/console shifter swap as well but money is tight right now from doing so much in such a small period of time.

just got the window motors and door lock actuators in the mail today so i have to install them soon.

on the vacuum pump note... what is the best brand/price/model?

I saw JEGs an summit both have pumps for mid 200s , then there are pumps that cost over 500 bucks... so what is the difference? I prefer to be in the mid 200 dollar range obviously !
My pump was like $260ish. It's actually a CVR brand, but marketed by summit. It was a snap wiring and mounting. The little bit i tested it, it ran flawlessly. No joke, the brakes on my cutlass are better than my daily 07 mazda...and i still have the blazer swap to do.

Just out of curiosity Scott, I've never run a vacuum pump, but may possibly need to in Olds Cool if I get any more aggressive with it. How loud/noisy is the pump?

D.
It's actually pretty quiet....wouldn't be any louder than an air ride compressor. I have my pump mounted above a layer of boom mat, then trunk carpet so that helped to deaden the noise....plus it mounts with rubber cushion mounts.

toying with the idea of getting the painless 10101 21 circuit classic customizable chassis harness for GM but not sure if I definitely wanna do it.

What percentage of the wiring in the car is bad? It might be easier to repair what you've got.

We used a painless harness when we put my brother's 78 Z28 back together. It was tailored specifically for 78-81 Camaro though. The quality was great as was the instructions. They are a little proud of their stuff cost wise, and are a little stingy on the small stuff. It might be a little work using a harness that is a little more generic since there will be more wires that you have to route and terminate (I'm thinking specifically park, turn, tail, brake lights). If you go that way you definitely will have a nice harness when you are done. Oh, and take a look at their powerbraid kit. Nice stuff. We used it. A little expensive. You could just use plain convoluted tubing.

Agreed....the painless kits are nice, but a little pricey sometimes.
It's worth the extra $$$ for the powerbraid stuff....I've used it exclusively and it looks way cleaner than the old school convo tubing. However, i buy the jegs brand which costs quite a bit less, and it looks the same.

well my main problem (the courtesy fuse blowing instantly) is solved because someone had grounded a live wire from the bulk head connector to the body...

still going to be trimming back the harnesses I don't need since the dash is out and cleaning up the wiring as well as figuring out why there is no power to the running lights at the switch.

also what is everyone's opinion on having the door chime and such is it a waste of space / adding to the birds nest of wires or nice to have ?

We put the key buzzer back in my brother's car. The sound will wear you out when you are trying to work on it but I think it's kinda cool to have it because it is some of the original personality of the car. It can also help keep you from locking the keys in the car.
