I haven't made it all the way through this yet, but saw the first few pages and the last few pages... and you are doing all the stuff I dream of but am too anxious to get the car driving to take the time to do. LOVE the flush mount marker lights. I'm stealing that idea and you cant stop me!

I also didn't realise you're in Calgary. I'm bringing the Malibu up there sometime next spring or early summer, we have to get together so I can see this fine craftsmanship in person!

Absolutely!
Any of my G body brothers have an open invitation to stop by the Rktpwrd Skunkworks whenever they’re in town.

Sounds like the timeline you mentioned should be right around when I’m aiming to have the car painted, or at least ready to. Shoot me a PM a little before you’re set to head out this way, and maybe we can even talk Randy (another GBF member and Calgary Malibu owner) into coming by as well.

And thanks very much for the comments on Olds Cool. It’s feeling pretty good knowing that I’m getting real close to painting this thing. With any luck, you just might be one of the first to see it in person with its shiny new coat. The marker light mod certainly isn’t patented, so steal away!

Btw, congrats on GBOTM, well deserved and not easy to win!

Well, you can’t keep me down for long.

Not exactly a whole lot of progress, but after 3 days bed rest, I got back out in the garage tonight. I took it easy, nothing strenuous, but I managed to get all the excess dried rust converter buffed back off, and a couple coats of epoxy brushed in the seams.

It’s progress, it’s better than nothing, and it’s a damn site better than being stuck in the house! Tomorrow I’ll scuff and sand the epoxy, and maybe get the new seam sealer laid in.

Feels good to be back at it again.

Donovan can you please explain what type of white epoxy you brushed and why ? Thanks again for your help and advice.

Tony, the epoxy I use is PPG’s DP48LV.

The color is inconsequential for the most part, it’s available in white, grey, and possibly black. Plus they can be mixed to achieve varying shades of grey. The last quart of epoxy I got was grey, but the last time I needed to restock I decided to get white, simply because it would require less actual paint to achieve “hiding” (complete coverage where the underlying color isn’t visible). Because, well, at least 50% of what I’m painting over the epoxy is white.

As far as why I apply it before seam sealer, the answer is simple: I’m not a fan of, nor do I believe, that seam sealer should be laid over bare metal. I’m pretty sure GM did it that way on our cars, and look at the number of problems there are with rust coming through from underneath. Take a close look at this picture, and you’ll see it’s a prime example:

By applying epoxy to the areas where the seam sealer will be applied ahead of time, I’m ensured that the metal is protected, and that the seam sealer won’t be going on over bare metal.

Also shown here for general information, are some pictures of what’s called a “P-Sheet”, it’s available for every professional refinishing product, and is the bible for everything related to it. Number of coats, compatibility’s, flash times, dry times, prep, you name it.

This is the P-sheet for the epoxy I’m using:
