When I ordered my kit from SST, I told them that the Tremec would be going into a factory 4 speed car, and that I wanted to retain the original shifter location. The shifter stub that was on the Tremec when I got it wasn't quite right, but I got in touch with them, and they shipped me a shifter stub that will work. When I got the kit, it came with the sheetmetal piece to cover the shifter hole in the floor, as Pagrunt has mentioned, but that's only used if you're converting an automatic car to the stick. Part of the beauty of the Tremec, is that you can taylor the shifter location to a wide range of positions.

It has been said that the bellhousing of the Fbody cars has an offset tilt that allows the Borg-Warner/Tremec shifter to use the stock hole. You might want to verify if that is true, and check to see if the transmission you choose can operate at a sideways incline.

You can move the shifter Front/back, but a side shifter is about 4" left of a centerline shifter and neutral won't be centered in a factory boot. Splitting the difference (moving the shifter left and the boot right) works better.

Hi All,
I replaced my Saginaw with an ST10 in the 1990s. It has held up since. The rear ratio on my 1978 SS El Camino is 3.08. I also used a combination of stock Corvette and Hurst parts to make a usable shifter. I had to trim my shifter hump a little. The console still fits.

Fast forward to today. I hate cruising at 3100 RPM on the Freeway. I looked at the SST package and it requires significant metalwork to the Trans tunnel. Because of the size of the transmission. They are strong as hell and huge. I am saving to purchase a Richman 5 speed. It fits in the stock location without modifications to the tunnel or driveshaft. According to Richmond. Does anybody have any experience with these transmissions?

AFAIK, the Richmond is just a T5. The Doug Nash design got bought by G-Force or Liberty, so they're still around. BUT, too much money, IMO.

Richmond 5 speed does not have an overdrive. Their 6 speed does. Highway cruise with their 5 speed will be the same as your current transmission.

Thanks for the information. It looks like ever 5-speed upgrade costs about $3500 in parts. The real cost is the labor to install. Either professional or driveway installation.
