After researching on 301Garage.com I settled on the 1979 301 manual trans cam. The engine in my Bonnewagon is a '79 301 w/manual trans so it should be a good fit. It was rebuilt years ago with the automatic cam before I converted to a manual. Melling makes the SPC-9 which they say is the replacement for the factory part. It is a copy of the Pontiac 527471 cam. This cam was also used on all standard 1978 400's. The TA I am working on has this cam and I am impressed with it. It should be somewhat more radical in the smaller 301. The regular 301 I have used 250° adv duration and the W72 used 274° adv. The W72 needed a timing retard module so I assume that duration is at the ragged end of the scale. This SPC-9 cam is right in the middle with 264° adv/189°@.050" and .364" lift. That seems puny by traditional Pontiac V-8 standards but remember the 301 is an economy/emission engine with restrictive intake and exhaust passages. That said I have been very happy with my 301's and 20mpg is a nice thing these days. I wanted something specific for the manual trans and I think I'll get some more mid-range power too. There were a few for sale on Fleabay and I chose the cheapest at $91. As luck would have it they had a 15% off coupon yesterday so the cam only cost me $77 w/free shipping. At that price I can't complain and if it is not what I expected no harm done.
