I had a 600 holley on my old thunderbird, I had it rebuilt by a guy who has 2000hp racecars my dad works with. Think started and ran like fuel injection. I mean, seriously. No pumps, just a blip of the key and whurrrrrrrrrrrr. Big block ford rumble. I guess it's like qjets in a way, some people know em inside and out, others dont.

You know, full disclosure, I admit I am not a Holley expert so I’ll give ya that one. The only things I know are that (at least these older model) Holleys are great on race cars but don’t tend to have a reputation for fuel efficiency. I have never had anyone tell me how their crappy properly built, clean, and adjusted QJ gas mileage is SO much better now that they put their Holley on. I have had people tell me that their car with an old long ago needed rebuilt QJ runs better now with a new Holley on it. Every one I’ve ever been around in my nearly 60 years ran horribly rich though they were not my cars so maybe they were ALL not adjusted properly. This one actually starts fine and the electric choke even works but long after it releases you spend more than 30 secs standing behind this car and your eyes are burning. But rather than teaching an obviously old dog new tricks to learn at this stage how to work on Holleys, my immediate desire to switch to a Quadrajet is that a QJ belongs on this car, I do know how to work on them, and I will soon have a Holley for sale, nearly new, in its original box. Your 67' is beautiful, what a nice car. While I like the new rims, the ones that came with it looked terrific color matched to the car. Installing the Cats isn't a bad idea, I'm probably going to put a pair of them back on my Cutlass when the time comes.

Thanks. Up close, the old SSIIs are quite pitted and in need of a good refurb job . . . which I might be willing to do if they were SS1s that belong on the car. Even have some BFG TAs I could have put on them. But, though the ride is a tad stiffer, the handling and even straight line traction is dramatically improved. Finally raining here [thankfully] so my extended drive is still in wait mode. But, my downshift switch for the turbo 400 won't be here until Tuesday anyway when I can put the carb swap to bed. The new design mounts on the carb instead of back on the firewall.

There is a part of me that actually likes the smaller rim, larger white letter tire look on these older cars. Even those great looking Sabers on my 87 will be an adjustment . . . though less of one, me thinks. And I definitely won't miss the splashy ride, poor handling, and no traction. (y)

Well it may seem like I've forgotten all about my 87 but you will just have to trust that it only "seems" that way. I have actually made some progress there too but just not enough warranting pictures and paragraphs yet.

On the 67 front, I really love the stance of this ole girl with the 245s on it. I am still needing to fabricate a couple of "the kit doesn't include everything required" for the modern downshift module. So, the QJ is on but I need to finish up my mounting bracket and run the wires. No rain for the last 6 months, the poor girl needs a bath already.

I finally broke down and got a double DIN head unit for my Tacoma so I can conveniently move the nice single DIN head over to this car. I wanted to go Retro on this one too, and may some day, but the ones that look good don't have all the right I/O hooks yet, and the single DIN Retrosound ones that do have all the right inputs and outputs just look cheap. So, I'll just use my Kenwood for now. I do need a few more toys to go along with it though. I really like these kick panels but I guess I should knock on wood with that until they are "in the car" huh? A strip of Dynamat on the deck behind the rear seat, carpet, then these Pioneer subs are a down fire unit, and the amp will sit right on top of it.

This outta sound pretty decent . . .

Are you cutting the dash, or doing an undermount?

Neither. Looks like I may be going Retro after all, huh? I would have realized this after pulling out the old one and reaching down for the Kenwood. Thanks for saving some headache . . .

Anyone want a good used Kenwood Excelon KDC-X998?

Well . . . it seemed like a good idea at the time . . . using the Kenwood in the 67 that is.

Guess I could have just shoved it in the glove box . . .

But, I'm still finally getting a double DIN in my Tacoma, even a backup camera so I can watch out for unattended 3 year olds that run up behind me in the parking lot at Lowes when mom is preoccupied 4 cars away on her damn phone, and since I wanted to go Retro on the 67 to begin with . . . well, I guess can we call this an accident on purpose? Bottom line: It should sound killer when done . . .

The RetroSound Long Beach is on the way . . .

The Good, the Bad, and the Cat:

The Good:

After a short drive to check out the Quadrajet and the new wheels/tires, sorry still no tire smoke since due to crappy weather and unexpected problems I am still putting this new toy through its paces. But the engine runs SO much better with the QJ, smoother, and no more dumping gas out the pipes. I am fairly confident the engine itself [knock on wood] is going to be fine. No smoke, pings, nicks, ticks, or clicks. Runs strong. transmission works as it should now and no drive line clunks, boings, tinks, or binks. And this car is just completely different with those 245/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sports on all 4 corners as it should be. When I get those Eibachs and Bilsteins on along with rectifying the bad and the ugly below, it will eventually be a pleasure to drive.

The Bad:

But, I got back from my drive and this motor has more ****ing oil leaks than it doesn't. Front and rear mains [fortunately appears pan side related], oil pan cork leak on the DS, timing cover on the PS just above the bottom seal, and both valve covers are oozing plus the oil cap had a couple layers of electrical tape wrapped around it apparently in an attempt to fix an ooze leak it has. So, if that all has to come loose to fix all the damn leaks, might as well pop the intake, put in a cam that will wake this motor up nicely, and then just decide whether to go back with a blasted and repainted stock intake or just slap a Performer on it? Leaning toward just a blast and paint of the stock intake since I've been spending enough money lately. And, all of the paint is peeling off it anyway . . . so I can purdy that up.

The Cat:

I thought this was going to just be my driver car so I could concentrate on the 87 . . . one of the rear side upholstered panels between the headliner and the rear deck just fell off during the drive and the other one popped loose and started flapping in the breeze [windows down - glorious day today]. How's that for fine craftsmanship? I'll fix it . . .

I would use a crank with that iron intake, seriously the SBO version was bad enough, the BBO version is 70 pounds! Make sure the pan bolts are tight, along with the timing cover. The front main could be a grooved harmonic balancer, check for that when you replace it. And definitely go with a neoprene rear main seal. I really like the Rocket Racing valve gaskets. My Felpro Permadry rigid carrier were seeping with my Edelbrock aluminum valve covers, they are also rubber with a rigid carrier, great when you need to remove the valve covers a million times to adjust valves.
