Thanks Chris and Bruce. I have been having absolutely no success in finding much info on that rear end. I did feel there were probably issues with it, otherwise everyone else would be using it. Too bad, as I'm sure there are plenty more of these 8.5's than the elusive GN and Olds 8.5

Nobody has any info on this 76 Monte 8.5?

I saw a rear end from a 76 monte carlo, and it's an 8.5". Any good? Is it worthwhile to put in my 80 monte drag project? Bolt in? or will I need new control arms.......... hmmmmm........

Could be that you are on the exhaust stroke and not the compression stroke. Try it with your thumb over the hole and feeling compression. Also make sure you have the wires in the correct spots on the cap, a pontiac rotor turns opposite to a chevy. Bin der dun dat!

a pontiac distributor runs counter clockwise, firing order is the same as chevy 18436572

Are the Grand Prix hoods specific to the GP? I have an 81, Is a Monte hood the same, or what else?

I tend to agree with what crotchss is saying. I have a 79 El Camino with a 700r4 hooked to the original column shift and I cannot shift down to 2nd or 1st with it. Might just be the way the PO installed it, but I do intend to fix it with a console shift, buckets, and column from an 84 elky donor.
