1970 Olds Cutlass S Rat Rod Style

Still waiting on the machine shop. As mentioned, 20 engines a month for the oil field. I will call them again on July 8th, get them to fix the crank and I will do the assembly myself. A couple more pieces.

Yeah, I will pull it off and redo it all. I was waiting for someone to spot it. The stuff on top was a layer on layer, was seaping past the O ring on the RobMc water neck. I regretted it as soon as I did it. It kind of snowballed with a stripped fastner, drilled and tapped over size along with the one side of the neck itself and already applied, wet Optimum Grey and turned into that. It was not a good time. Sure, remind me of reality😵

You could've just said Tynan came for a visit and gave you a hand....

Believe it or not, the thermostat would have worked fine. What would not have worked fine is the bypass, plugged solid. Thanks to Donavan's perfectionist eye, he reminded me this is a well made, polished piece. I exacto knived and razor bladed all the old RTV and thermostat gasket off and removed the 160 Robert Shaw high flow thermostat. Then I scrubed it with two SOS pads and then used Mother's aluminum wheel polish and buffed. Here is the end result.

Much better!
Even for the non-perfectionist eye.
😁

I went slightly heavy with Optimum Grey, had way to many Olds water necks leak.

I have the same one, o-ring water necks shouldn’t leak, unless the mating surfaces aren’t flat and true, or the o-ring isn’t thick enough/exposed enough to compress to make a seal. I would seriously consider checking them with a straight edge and true them up with a flat file if it leaks, along with examining the o-ring very closely. Any nicks, cuts or abrasions, replace it.

You shouldn’t need that much, if any, RTV sealant on it.
