What brand of paint are you using.I used to be big on the US brands Dupont, PPG, RM. But I have to say that the euro paints are in there own class.

Looking at using Dupont Chromabase for the basecoat but using a Dupont Premier clear instead of the chromaclear. Although I've been told it almost doesn't matter what you go with, just that the cheaper stuff requires a lot more work to make it look nice.

Yeah. It actually looks nicer on the cobra than the OEM vehicles I've seen around town. I believe it comes down to the fact that when you use the paint and put the proper prep work into it, it comes out a heck of a lot nicer.

Heh... my dad's '85 S10 was this color 😀

Yes, that's me helping wax. Note old-man bug guard on the front 8) Truck was only a couple years old at this point, if that.

What I have noticed with the euro paints is there clear is very clear next to no yellow tint to there clears. When I used to go to car shows I could spot the cars painted with euro paints they would just stand out. It had nothing to do with prep just how true the color was.I do not know if the US clears have caught up. It has been a long time since I have been to a show. One of the tri colors I did like was a color called cheery black this color had so many looks.

Re: 1987 Olds Pro-touring project build *LONG*

So I've been reconsidering color combinations. Mostly because the one paint supply place in town is just ridiculous on their prices for Dupont paint. That and I've seen the Dupont paint sprayed out and didn't think much of it.

So now I'm considering using House of Kolor since its quite a bit cheaper than the Dupont stuff.

They have a midnight blue that I like but it requires a black base coat so I'd essentially be buying two basecoat paints for the car. Really don't want to have something quite that complicated.

But they do have a Black Pearl:

Which got my thinking that I could do a similar paint scheme as the '79 H/O, only without all of the gold on the actual car.

I was thinking instead of having the centers of my wheels painted gold. Maybe a color something like this:

And then using this gold as well for a pin stripe on the car.

Thoughts?

i like the pearl idea personally. My buddy sprayed his truck a black cherry pearl or something of that name, and its beautiful. looks black in a certain light and has a slight red hue in adifferent light. You know how hard it is to keep a black car clean though

Actually, it was the Trans-AM that got me thinking about the color combo. I like the "Bandit" T/A, just without all of the pin stripping, etc.

Something more like this:

I was thinking the look would be a bit more like this:

Would the pearl set off the gold right though (have to see it)? Against jet black it can look really nice if tastefully done (like your two pics), In my mind aluminum or a silver would go better with the pearl.

Re: 1987 Olds Pro-touring project build *LONG*

The Bandit T/A is very simular to the look I'm thinking about going. Black IS an overly used color. But, as my late, great mother always said, "Nothing beats a black car..." Her words echo in my mind every time I think about deviating from that idea.

Here's some ideas I've come up with. I hope nobody objects to me using pics of their cars. Consider it flattery, as I still to this day drool over these...

Keep in mind, these are the wheels I will be using and also the same type of wheels on an El Camino just for referance. I *may* end up painting the centers black. All pics are thumbs so click them for a better look-see ...

I considered using a black base and using a very faint pearl to give the car a differant look in the direct sunlight but also still being black in the shade or at night.

I realize the above pics is a high $$$ paint job I'll probably never be able to afford. So, I thought about going either blacked out or with the stock type look with the chrome trim.

But, in the back of my mind, I keep reverting to this one picture I use as my desktop. As hard as it may be I can not find a scheme or color I like any better that this one:
