Hooray! Our second mechanical problem has appeared! It has sprung a fuel leak big enough to puddle on both sides of the intake.

If you have never had the pleasure of working on a TPI intake - then you don't know real fun.
I did a little tutorial with Natasha so as to explain why I was crying... and it wasn't the fumes. I pulled out a more conventional short runner port injection intake, upper plenum and TB to demonstrate the differences. And, concluded by saying "this is the one time function followed form".

Natasha said "guess I am getting a swap sooner rather than later, eh?" and "I guess I am going to learn how my car works...". She's pretty awesome.

I love TPI’s. Nothing bad about them for street cars. They were the LT1’s daddy and the LS1’s granpappy.

Stupid torque for the HP, and it put the fun back into driving a car.

And the coolest looking factory setup ever made by an OEM (I have 3 in the basement ;) )

She was beating on it when it broke... so at least she was having a good time.

I think I found the solution...

Dude... it's a 305. A smooth running 305... but, still a stock 305.

---

So, after a little investigation the fluid on the intake wasn't varnished gas, but rather engine oil.

So I did some sleuthing and jumped the fuel pump to see if I could detect a physical leak along the rails. Nada. So, I got to thinking where else could it be leaking from that would create such a noxious gasoline smell. The fuel lines mayhaps? The come up off the DS frame rail, have a pair of Saginaw fitted lines that connect the feed and return to the fuel rails. I mean, if it's going to leak and stink badly it will be right were there are multiple failure points and a red hot exhaust manifold - right? Grab a couple of wrenches and torque checked them. One was loose-ish the others took a tweak to seat as well.

You see... The PO loved painting every nut and bolt and accessory and component he could reach... usually silver. The ends of the flex hoses had been treated to a "touch of class" silver. At least he cared... (maybe enough to start a fire?)

I suppose Natasha just got them to back off enough while goofing around.

I'll try and replicate the issue tomorrow. Working under the hood of a car on a humid 40*C day is not pleasant.

Oh, and the oil on the intake? That's because he didn't put thread sealer on the torx bolts he removed to paint gloss black... and they shoot right into the valley through the heads.

She sounds more Canadian than you. You never say eh.

You knew it was going to happen. Natasha and I split the day with her taking the morning session and me doing Daddy duty for the girls. Awesome to have the girls out to see their Mama's return to the track after a 9 year hiatus.

It's slow as dirt, but it looks good under compression and dive. Also, it needs an exhaust system upgrade...

Any reason you didn't run it in the afternoon? #spousewars

COVID stupidity. The kids aren't allowed on the private property, and they cannot be left unattended on the public side. The club is in no position to alter the agreement with the venue to accommodate us. So she got 3 runs in the morning and I got 3 in the afternoon.

Better than none I suppose.

The "fourth' wave should be fun.
